FOSS gamedev and creative worlds

In my quest to get every type of item in the game (1), I was a bit too careless around lava :-)

Now I have 3-4 bones, and I'm not sure how they should work.
I can drop them, place them on the floor or wall, and pick them up again,
but how to access/get their contents ?

There is free space in my inventory, so shouldn't those bones
just give my their contents when I pick them up, and disappear when empty ?

[1] BTW, there are no Obsidian Glass Panes, Bottles, Drinking Glasses ?

As in version 0.4.14 and newer the bones behave like this:

Untouched bones
They can be either fresh or are older than 20 minutes, this means they are expired. You can collect your own bones and those who are expired (without a "fresh" notice).

Manual collecting: Either move each bone slot into your inventory to make the bone to be removed completely
Punching: Moves all items inside the bones into your inventory, including the bone node itself if there's enough space.

Touched bones
Means, they were already collected. You can dig them like dirt, place like dirt, /pulverize like dirt and build houses like with dirt. The bone inventory is locked and can not be used as a cheap chest.

I have my bones in my inventory, with free space available.
If they still contain something, how do I get it out ?

The wiki seems to be incomplete or is simply not up-to-date. The bones node is only completely gone (as in: not turned into an inventory item) when it's in the above called "untouched" state and it's emptied manually.
There are special cases where it is possible to have further items inside one inventory item when using the wrench from the technic modpack on a chest. But don't worry, the bones in your inventory are completely empty.
