How did you discover Minetest?

by Menche » Sat Apr 07, 2012 23:04

I thought it would be interesting to see how people found out about Minetest. As for me, I found it when I was searching the AUR for minecraft and saw an entry for a minecraft clone. I wasn't expecting it to be any good, but I installed and tried it anyway; I'm glad I did :)

I found out of necessity. Minecraft didn't run well (java doesn't work well) on my computer. And I happened to stumble upon a video of it while watching playthroughs of minecraft. So I used google. And found this.

I didn't know about minecraft (is it free or not? - I didn't even know) and searched for it on Archlinux in the AUR
Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
yaourt -Ss minecraft

One of the first hits was minetest.

I searched "Minecraft Clones" on Google, and I went to Saxony's Minetest.com and I went onto a link and it went to the real site c55.me/minetest (which is now Minetest.net) and downloaded Minetest.

Started searching for open-source/free alternatives to MineCraft that included a way to host my own server so my kids could play without my worrying about needing to patrol\nanny-sit while they did it. 3.1 worked well, but I found myself drifting towards the unstable releases which led to loading Linux on their machines to allow playing (the Win versions were crashing on their XP machines), then from there I started looking at how various mods were done and now I check in daily to look at what's new.

I googled ''Free Minecraft clones''.
I used 3.0.1 back then... Haha! Good times. :)

I'm not much of a gamer, but at some point there was just too much talk about Minecraft, so I thought I'd check it out.

I looked at a couple of videos, but wanted to try it for myself.
Somewhere in my mail I had a free trial, but I discovered it had expired.
I tried the Minecraft Classic (which is free) but found it extremely boring.

But more importantly, I couldn't get it to work on my home PC (Fedora Linux); and I wasn't going to pay $27 for a game that:
a) I didn't know (at the time) if I was going to enjoy
and b) Might not even work on my machine.

Next logical step was Googling for clones; check which would work on linux, and watch a few videos before bothering to download/install.

Back then there was only one decent, portable, and playable "clone". Minetest, of course.

I still don't play all that much.

Actually, I spend more time looking at the code changes, compiling, and in overall just checking the progress, than playing.
Yup. Geeky as charged.
Unless otherwise specified: I use linux and run (and compile) the latest dev.

I made a list of Minecraft clones for
a german game-community forum
(http://www.gamehalle.de/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=123)
and my personal german blog
(http://www.chyper.at/cms/?page_id=29)

I play minetest and Minecraft in my free time.

I was interested if there was an open source clone clone of minecraft, so I googled it. I found minetest and manic digger. I chose minetest for the following reasons
  • I didn't see a lot of activity in manic digger.
  • According to the title page it tried to be different from minecraft.
  • Manic Digger was c#, so it would run less good on linux
We must be careful not to clone Notches mistakes.
