Minetest Admin Association (MTAA)

by garywhite » Mon Nov 28, 2016 20:16

Hello,
I am starting a group called the Minetest Admin Association (MTAA). It is a smaller, more secure way for Minetest admins and developers to communicate information. Instead of using public IRC channels to send information, we use a fully private and secret IRC channel to send information and discuss MT issues securely and privately. Below is the admission form. NOTE: IF YOU ARE NOT AN DEV, OR AN ADMINISTRATOR ON A MT SERVER YOU WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. If you are a developer, please type (Dev) in the answer box for Q1 next to your MT username. Only half of the questions are required, and we do not take any personal information. I'm using an application because it is easier than sending invitations to each IRC member and forum member.

I don't want you to take this badly, but I think this would not be useful. First off, Google Groups is VERY unsecure, considering the fact that it is Google. IRC is just fine. If the whole security thing is an issue, than you could ask c55 to run his own IRC server, like I already do myself. Discord as well, is very unsecure as it is not open source. Still better than Google, but not much.

Really though, who (aside from me) would be in any way interested in hacking MT stuff? Also, when was the last time that info really needed to be privately communicated between devs and admins? Plus, IRC is plenty secure considering that it is encrypted. You can send what are essentially PMs in IRC too, so that's covered.

I almost guarantee you that IRC is far more secure than Google, as the service itself is typically powered by open source software, and can be run on a personal server. Plus, it's also encrypted. Over all, Google is crap. It's closed source, I've already known for years that they steel all my info. Forget their terms and all. Recently one of my friends got a warning that his account would be suspended because he sent religious emails.

What I'm trying to say, is that IRC is fine. If it's really needed, one of the MT community members can even run the server themself. So yeah, this is just my researched and experienced opinion :D

This is not really needed, we already have IRC, forums and Github.

I knew Google was bad, but didn't know that they suspend accounts if you send religious emails. I'm not that suprised. Maybe one day when I send a religious email, I can find out what they do. I know they say "Google Drive. A secure place to store your files." That is a lie. Maybe they mean secure from me... :P

What information would need to be discussed in secret? Or maybe that isn't for me to know.

Hey. I thought this was a pretty damn good idea. Why don't you people take this seriously for a minute and see that MT needs somewhere OTHER THAN IRC to discuss projects and stuff? You people need to think more.

I meant the you people need to think more as a joke. I did not mean to offend anybody with that. This was a good idea in my eyes, that is all I'm saying.

Why does this seem to me like a thinly veiled attempt to create a super secret club? Generally, when I fix a bug in a mod or improve some functionality on my server I will share it here, in the appropriate forums.

Heck, I don't even like #minetest-project since it makes no sense to me to exclude most users from contributing to the discussion.
