Best FOSS screen recording software for minetest vids

I have been trying to make a minetest video but have been having some problems. I have used recordMyDesktop successfully in the past but for some reason it seems to only record a few frames before flaking out. I have recently switched from xubuntu to Debian 8 + LXDE so I am not sure if that is related or if something has changed in MT that would cause this.

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced such problems or can suggest a suitably light-weight alternative.

I recommend either OBS or SimpleScreenRecorder

OBS (the new version) has quite a few features whilst also being lightweight and not very bloated - such as streaming and view composition (placing text etc)

SimpleScreenRecorder does what it says on the tin. Very simple, very easy, very quick

That sounds ideal, I'll give it a go, thanks!

Do not try to install simplescreenrecorder on Debian 8, I totally destroyed my computer trying.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Could you elaborate? I must say that ssr installation on Debian 8 is far from `./simple-build-and-install`, especially it seems with amd64 and fglrx drivers. I gave up on it last night in favour of beer but was planning to have another go today, it looks like it can't find libGLU and likely I just need to update some symlinks. I will see how it goes, this is a relatively new install so I'm not too bothered if I break it but thanks for the heads-up anyway.

Update: While for some reason I could not convince it that I do have all the necessary libs, I did manage to find this package that works for me at the time of writing.

Thanks for the suggestion, I was going to try that next but SSR seems to have everything I need and is working well now that I have gotten it installed.

I installed SSR using the author's repo:

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:maarten-baert/simplescreenrecorder
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install simplescreenrecorder
# if you want to record 32-bit OpenGL applications on a 64-bit system:
sudo apt-get install simplescreenrecorder-lib:i386

(x)Ubuntu 16.10 though, not vanilla Debian

I use OBS for my minetest gameplay videos, I really like the ability to record two audio channels, so I can record the games audio and my mic audio separately, and then do audio cleaning on my voice and get the volumes mixed nicely.

SimpleScreenRecorder is what I used when I'm doing something that requires changing between windows, as OBS doesn't do that so well for me. SSR only has one audio though, but usually when I'm doing tutorials I just need my mic's volume anyway.

@Nathan and @benrob, thanks for the suggestion, you guys both make excellent videos, I will keep that it mind. I would also be interested to know what editing software you use (if any), I used OpenShot which I found easy to understand and it did the job eventually but was very prone to crashing.

I wonder... Anyone knows of a screen recording software that can on GNU/Linux and that features mouse-click highlighting?

Kdenlive is relatively easy to use and feature rich.
