I'm not sure what is better. Tone Mapping on or off. The new rainforest litter looks extremely red and saturated with Tone Mapping

What is your default setting?

Sometimes I use it, sometimes I don't. It depends on my mood really, or if I am working on a texture pack.

That is something texture pack creators really need to think about.
When working on a TP you have to test each texture against these different options. If not, some textures will look really bad with certain option enabled.

The moment you enable shaders (even with none selected) it affects things such as water, and you need to compensate for this. Because every user has their own preference, so it should look good in any option.

It can take a long time but it is worth the work.

I tried tone mapping... it looks pretty horrible, and I'm not sure what the point of it is intended to be.

The only issue with the tone mapping, right now is... that sucker is full on. It was implemented, but not finely tuned.
