I have noticed that in 0.4 there are no rats or fireflys and when I try to place one, it does not appear.

all mobs have been taken out to be re-made or something like that...including rats unfortunately....as for fireflys i have never found one so i dont feel there loss xD

In some versions there are no rats and in some there are, but there are no butterflys.

in the latest stable (0.3) there is because someone gave me a firefly once...as i said i never found one before but i have had one before :p

im thinking fireflys would be part of the animal mod. ive been though all the textures before to. no firefly in the main game. witch is what /giveme "anything" would imply, /giveme animal_vombie:Vombie might work tho

not to get too totally off topic here, but I just added the animals mod and noticed the Vombies. Do they actually try to attack you?
