by Alo2 » Sat Jun 02, 2012 06:19

Can someone please try to get version 0.4dev 20120408 onto linux so people like me who run ubuntu or any other software can play diffrent versions of minetest. I can only play with 0.3.1,so if anyone can help please do.

Thanks Alo2

What worked best for me was compiling it for my (L)ubuntu. Instructions with more backkground info are on internet. For linux:
1. Open your terminal (under accessoires).
2. Copy/paste/enter each letter:
a. sudo apt-get install build-essential libirrlicht-dev cmake libbz2-dev libpng12-dev libjpeg8-dev libxxf86vm-dev libgl1-mesa-dev libsqlite3-dev libogg-dev libvorbis-dev libopenal-dev
b. wget https://github.com/celeron55/minetest/tarball/master -O master.tar.gz
c. tar xf master.tar.gz
d. cd celeron55-minetest-286edd4 (look at the info on your screen and use that numer instead of 286edd4, probably 747ff7d)
e. cd games/
f. wget https://github.com/celeron55/minetest_game/tarball/master -O master.tar.gz
g. tar xf master.tar.gz
h. mv celeron55-minetest_game-* minetest_game
i. cd ..
j. cmake . -DRUN_IN_PLACE=1
k. make -j2

Now you can exit, go to your filemanager, homedirectory. go to celeron directory, bin directory and execute minetest. Enjoy!

Thank Bad-Command who helped me with this one!

Yes. I have 11.10 too. Lubuntu is like ubuntu, but with less pre-installed features.

Hi, making any progress installing 0.4?

Installed the way I tried to explain, you can have different versions of minetest next to each other in your home directory. You can also copy a version to a new folder (don't forget the 2 hidden files). That gives you some space to experiment with mods :)

P.s. As far as I know, not all the mods work on the latest two 0.4 versions, but you may give a try updating it. I'll try but that can take some time. I've low knowledge of linux and no knowledge of Lua and C++.

I'm not familiair with using launchpad. I can't say it's better or less than obtaining minetest using the terminal (dot.prompt). I only know that using the terminal with the commands I wrote down (copied from a read.me) installs the latest version and it took me 5 minutes second time. Further, I can put downloaded mods easy in the mods-folder, without using sudo and for the people with programming knowledge, you can see the source.

If you want to use launchpad, did you try the 64 or 32 version? I understood from reading a bit, that 32 is the common standard most computers use and 64 is for the 'high end' computers. Further, as far as I know, minetest is not visible in the software centre or the Synaptic Package Manager (I used that one), until you add (a link?) to your software resources and update the lists. Then you can install minetest with those programs. It will be installed in your root. Every time you want to put a downloaded mod in your mods-folder, you have to 'sudo' it. I had to close the (link) afterwards because my automatic updates got messed up.

I don't know more about it, I just know this from trial and error, so probably there are still some errors in this writing, but minetest works for me now.

Yes, follow the experts instructions

a. Open www.minetest.net
b. Click on the Download tab on top of the page
c. Click on daily/unstable --> Ubuntu/Mint
d. You're now on the "Minetest Developers" team page. Click on (Read about installing) and follow the steps.
e. Open an extra window to display the "Technical details about this PPA" to copy it :-)

1. I think, looking at it, that this is another Minetest compiler than the one of Captain Trips. I've not enough knowledge to advice you in this. I only know that installing through this site made it work for me.
2. I did it like this the first time, but made a mistake with the signing key I think (copied probably the whole line :-/ ), probably causing the update problems.
3. I searched minetest in the synaptic package manager (SPM), clicked the square and then pushed apply. A minetest icon appeared under games and I could play.

With my present experience, I personally prefer my earlier adviced method. Go to www.minetest.net , click the Github tab (instead of the download button), scroll down until the readme.txt and follow the instructions under "Compiling on GNU/Linux" You then compile it yourself, directly from the source offered you by celeron55. The "disadvantage" here is that you regularly have to compile yourself if you want the latest version, instead of clicking a square in SPM

Either way, it's worthwile to install 0.4. I wish you the best of luck installing it (without making too much typo's)!

too poor, here http://www.minetest.net/download.php
Easy as that, unless you need to compile, (I'm currently on Windows XP but when I get my new laptop in September I will get Ubuntu 12.04, until it updates to 12.10 and I'm guessing its (year).(month number)

Here is a video guide how to compile MT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHbCH4smxRQ&feature=plcp
Even if you haven't compiled anything before, you should understand it.

I have WINE Windows Program Loader but dont know how to use it. WOuld I be able to run the Windows 0.4 through WINE? [/edit]WINE works. Use WINE on LInux and it will run all your .exe so I ran 0.4 in that.

COMPILE IT YOURSELF, YOU SHOULD NOT USE WINE.
