Got an idea for griefer problems.

This is kind of a stupid idea but here: griefers come to servers to destroy things. Why not set up a server where all you do is annihilate and kill. Griefers could have a fun time beating the shit out of each other while others build on servers.

griefers didn't work like that

Griefers want to destroy Things other Players made with "Love".
They don't want to destroy Things that have been copy|pasted from other Maps

You mean "hardcore" PvP? Griefers on these servers almost always use hacks/cheats, see Minecraft.

But they can't here - data is provided by the server.

We could provide it. And we could make something to be destroyed. Mauvebic posted about buildings that could be made from a block.

Nope, Minecraft is much more cheat-proof than Minetest, especially if you use NoCheatPlus. In Minetest, it is possible to make a god mode hack (at least, avoiding fall and lava damage), a fly hack (not a "fast hack" though), building scripts (blocks can't be placed from far away), instant mining... you can't do those in Minecraft.

So would this be a server worth creating?

Not really...

The way to prevent griefing is a no-brainer. Download Mythruna, and log onto their main server. Griefing is not possible there due to the property system. Standard users are able to select any unclaimed 32x32 area as their "stronghold". They can ask the server admin for a larger "town" area. But the software prevents anyone from messing with the player's property unless the player specifically adds them to the "badge list" of people who can also build on their property. The system even comes with property markers and glowing visible boundaries that can be turned on and off. I doubt anyone could pull off something this sophisticated in a mod, but if not, maybe we could ask Celeron to add it to his todo list. To me griefing prevention has to be top priority, who really cares about anything else? Critcal to this system is a visible map where you can see who owns what.

Something similar has been done in Minetest, see here: http://minetest.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=258. However, this fork is very outdated, and it's developer seems to have disappeared. I wonder if someone could update that for 0.4 and make it's features available in the modding api?

This is false. You can actually make a speed hack, and fly hack. Not sure if you can make any other type of "hack" cause i haven't really looked into it.

The ones i made are pretty primitive but do work i tried them on ecube server and gameboom and work perfectly.

for the fly hack you simple have to increase the max sneak value from 0.5 to about 10000 and change the value of stepping on ground as stepping on unloaded, that way you suffer no damage from fall. The only problem with this is you can't take off, you need to get on a very high hill to fly very high. But it works

And for the speed hack you just have to increase the value of max walk speed. And add a couple more lines. cause if you just increase the value the server will just send you back where you started.

Maybe i should look more into the code to see whats possible.

@Menche:

Hope you don't mind but I moved our discussion about property & clans to here the "Feature Discussion" forum here
http://minetest.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1694&p=2
because they were already discussing similar ideas, and on that forum it is more likely to get implemented. I replied to your post there.

Another thing you could do is simply stop playing on this software. I've seen nicer things than this game floating in public toilets. I think that it's a failed remake of Minecraft and that someone just wanted some attension and made this. Personally, I'd get Minecraft, it's honestly so much better. It actually works and is made up of more than 12 pixels.

Minecraft is a game for people who want things served to them on a sliver platter and have nice running pcs. Minetest is for people with less powerful cards.

It's true, I could just go out and buy Minecraft. But I have to ask myself, what gives me more joy, putting another $27 in Notch's pocket, or helping a bunch of ragtag misfits create something really kick ass out of nothing. Give me the misfits any day.

If you don't like minetest koil, don't play it. Don't complain or call this game crap.

A while ago, I was trying to come up with a system to save the server output. This would save a record of all blocks broken and placed. So when something is griefed, pick a block from that structure and search the log for the coords, and get a history of all blocks that were placed/removed from that spot, and the players that did it. Really old thread I made about this here: http://minetest.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=523. I'm starting to experiment with this again, as I have my own server now.

AWESOME IDEA
So the griefers can exercise their passion for destruction, and the ''other people'' can build stuff and live. Therefore, Minetest will offer more options for everyone, and Minetest will become more-popular, because even GRIEFERS would have a good place in the community, unlike MINECRAFT, where everyone hates griefers.
P.S.

I agree, completely. It is best to help Celeron55 complete this awesome game, rather than give Notch some more money to use to stuff his fat face (if you haven't heard - Notch has given the position of ''lead developer'' to someone else, but he still owns the game, and he gets most of the money)

When you are done creating something, why not allow everyone to place 2 points which will then mark a cube in which everything inside can be saved. Then when something gets griefed the user who created it can restore it. There would have to be limits as to how much a person could save, 1 or 2 versions of 1 or 2 creations of a limited size. Otherwise the griefers could overload the server by saving too much stuff. This would also be a really cool way of being able to pick up an object you created and move it somewhere else. The griefers could have their fun destroying your stuff and you could just bring it right back yourself without having to dig through the server logs. You would have to allow only one instance of that object on the server otherwise griefers could use it to rapidly create thousands of clones and clutter up things.

What you just said is what worldedit does and that mod has been around for quite some time :)

Yep but I think you would have to limit it, like I described above otherwise griefers could go nuts creating thousands of cloned objects. If you had this on a server, then it would be cool to write an angry birds mod like the one on minecraft: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJYlgeuio3I
And put this bad boy on the server.

This is how I start my server to save the output to a file:
Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
minetestserver --gameid minetest --worldname Server\ World 2>> ~/servlog.txt

However, this file is going to get huuuuge over time, and simply renaming the file and making a new one requires a server restart to use the new file. Is there a way to switch out the log file without restarting?

I guess you simply make a new log named the same as the original, with an extra symbol, and quickly rename the other one to something else, remove the extra symbol from the log name, and there you go.
Oh and, you might want to get on the server and tell everyone that they need to stop doing anything, stop chatting, stop moving at all, press ESC and wait for 30 seconds, THEN do the renaming process.
