I want to change my player (aka the green thing) to look different

Just edit the texture pack you are using, or download one from the textures forum.

If you want to change the Look of ALL Players you see... ^^^^ Up there!
If you only want to change you look(like Skins)... ...thats not possible

Java doesn't run well on many computers. We should stay away from it.
