Minetest ui redefined

by prowseed » Sun Sep 16, 2012 00:12

Hello,
I took some approach to redefine the minetest ui main frame. Going further I've crafted some views of website design.
I spend one night with a beer for this with small changes later on : ) I could develop it further I think, but above all I wanted to keep it simple. I really love minetest for running on my crappy laptop thus I've made this effort to beautify ( in my opinion, ofcourse :) ) Minetest. What do you think?

http://upload.maciejkwas.pl/plik5/static.jpg - static content page
http://upload.maciejkwas.pl/plik5/game.jpg - in-game main frame

Cheers

That's a fine job you did there! I wish it could be implemented on the official site and client :)

Wow, that is amazing! As good as anything on the web. Hope celeron uses it! Now I just wish there were links added on the download page for; Additional Content (takes you to the Mod Releases Page) and Improved Graphics (takes you to the textures page.) There needs to be more visibility of mods and textures. Hardly any of the youtube videos show people using Mods or textures. I see only 50 downloads of each release of Immersive Sounds Mod at best. Yet I'm guessing there are at least tens of thousands of people playing MineTest if not way more than that. I don't think the other Mod's are doing much better.

Wow, did not expect such favorable opinions : )
While I'm looking on it with my critique eye I can see that I could made up a lot of thing better, but for now I have a daily work, freelance work and my studies will start again in two weeks from now so I won't really have a lot time for this, yet I would like to mock it up a little better to satisfy at least myself : ) I think in next few days I will extend those views so they could pretend to the final version that would be passed on to celeron if he is willing to receive it.

Ofcourse logo is not mine ;) I just grabbed it from the current website, like it really much so I just dropped small little change for it not trying to crush it down.
Fonts used in the project are Source Sans Pro which is released under Open Font License and ONRAMP designed by Michael Spitz released with pay-what-you-want model ( I have paid as much as I wanted for this, but this could be $50 as well as $0 for others, just remember that the man putted some work into it so it's more fair to pay at least $20 than $0 ).
Laptop is really quickie, took me something like 3 minutes to draw : )

The credits should be Perttu "celeron55" Ahola,

not Perttu Ahola, celeron55. --sound like there are two people

Also, you should make the big green button with the download link change depending on the operating system.

Only needs some simple javascript to do it or you can use a server side language.

Details, details... : )
I think the most important thing for now is to record awesome video that will expose all aspects of minetest including mods and multiplayer. I could eventually made up some editor works, but I'm too big newbie in minetest to taking care of shots. Anyone? Perhaps there is already some movie out there in community? : )

//EDIT

Well. for now it is just flat layout, but cutting it down to html will be fairly easy as the whole structure is not really complicated ; )

look for videos by 313hummer on youtube. But a lot has been added to Minetest since he did those.

I like this much more than the other proposed website design.

It does look more professional, and I like it as well, but it is not related to Minetest: No texture backgrounds or styles
(and it looks too commercial: which is not the aim or style of Minetest).

The other one is, and supports punbb (the forum you are in now), minetest extensions, minetest skins.
Also, the forum fits into it, and the player can choose their style: whether that be dirt, stone or "classic" (the design you are in now).

If you dislike parts of that design, please, help me by writing what you do not like, and what you want to change

My Review

  • The computers are cut off - they dont look natural
  • The green in the panel behind the "watch me" box is different to the background
  • Donate button on the donate button does not look right in empty space: make it bigger or put it to the left of the text
  • Nav bar is jumbled up: the order it confusing sometime. Similar links should be next to each other

Recommended

  • W3C and CSS checker would be better in my opinion if it was level with credits, but aligned to the right
  • Background green might look better as the same green as the download button
  • Compatibility with punbb (Login/Register)
  • punbb edition of my minetest extensions when available

Nope. it has same color. The problem is that author didn't post his sources (like .psd/.xcf or whatever) so I had to cut everything from .jpg.

Very clean. As a web programmer myself, those designs are very attractive to me. The main page's green header should be a little narrower though :)

what would be cool is if you put the games code faded into the background. open source and all. very lightly there, like almost visible so it doesn't pull away from the page.

You did a Dam good job.
