Getting Funding for Minetest using KickStarter
What about the idea of using KickStarter to get funding for Minetest? Some of these projects get $1,000,000 plus. Think of all the c++ developers celeron could hire with that... I think the selling point is unlike Minecraft, Minetest makes Modding easy... And the funds are needed to build the ultimate engine, so that the community can build whatever their imaginations come up with. Maybe what makes Minetest unique from the other projects on kickstart is that it is open source, and that should definitely be used as a selling point. Another thing that could be done is maybe using some of the money generated to not just pay c++ developers, but also to reward Mod & Texture developers as well, as Modding is such a big part of what Minetest has become. There could be a system that tracks Mod & Texture pack downloads or installs (with a way of ensuring that they are legit) and give the Mod/TexturePack developer a buck every time someone downloads their mod.
What would also be cool is an in game way to make finding out about and installing Mods & Textures easy for end users. Getting on Kickstart could be a way for Minetest to get more notoriety. But it would have to be done right. You have to give the donators a reward for donating, so something creative would have to be done there as well. Maybe Minetest T-Shirts (which would also serve as a form of advertisement).
