I was also working on fixing parts of that, in particular the "supervolcano geyser" around the 'space elevator' columns.

Two questions:

- what are the best strategies to kill such large bodies of lava and water?

- why does lava/water spread out in certain intervals in - apparently - thin air?

Okay, kill the source blocks by placing bricks for lava, torches for water.

It does that, because someone placed bricks under it.

If you encounter a large body of water that seems to grow even as you clean out source blocks, try surrounding it then filling with a checker pattern.

There's now a new survival map on this server, so don't be surprised if you can find the features described in this thread.

Place a block in the same space as the uppermost block of lava\water. It will start to dissipate beneath that and the flow will stop. Lather, Rinse, Repeat until all the lava/water is gone.
