I agree with madchicken13,
even if it is "disgustingly easy" to compile on ubuntu, not EVERY ONE who uses this linux version or any othe r OS automatically (osmosis) knows "HOW" TO.
I am in my 40's, and have been working on and with PCs and MACS since i was 9 years old, and have been an accomplished Computer/Network Specialist & Instructor for nearly 20 years, and I don't "automatically" know HOW TO compile source code on all OSs. If you are new to more advanced aspects of any OS, it usually takes "someone" such as yourself, to NEVER judge and to possibly "encourage" others instead, by carefully guiding them with helpful and knowledgeable guidance & instruction.
The term "Techno-geek" shouldn't be translated as "snooty" & "selfish" hoarding of Personal Computing & Programming knowledge, should it???

anyway...

HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY THANKSGIVING ALL!!!!

"Noobs"???

Honestly, do YOU learn from others, and actually ask questions like most folk..... or.....Do YOU just "automatically" know "everything" by some kind of electronic osmosis when You touch things???

I admit, there are some unthoughtful and crappy questions asked sometimes, usually by non-technical-minded individuals, but there are plenty of legitimate questions asked by "noobs" who just want to learn,,,, and maybe eventually learn and progress to the next level of technical level, Minetest or otherwise.

Seems that You might want to keep a more open mind & heart about "others" and their questions.
Maybe we can just return to the Q/A and leave any unnecessary "judgements" out.

Thank You for pointing me to the readme file.
Although this is very useful to me also, I was speaking more in general about "noobs", questions asked, etc.
I started on this point in my general reading of some of these Minetest topics, as I respect this open-source project and the game itself.
Not trying to be preachy on my soapbox.

I have learned great patience and understanding by teaching Computer Science subjects to my own children, "noobs", Tech Trainees, and even those that fear personal computing, for many years.

Thank You Again, Jordan4ibanez

Dear jordan4ibanez,

Some people in here are completely noobs yes, some don't even know what an EXE file is. Some are average users that know how to run programs and all the basic stuff, but don't quite yet get the grasp at compiling. Yet there are users that have the knowledge to rewrite the Unix OS from scratch.

Here in Uruguay, we have the OLPC, which, as you may know, comes with either Sugar or Ubuntu installed (i.e: it's Linux based). What you say is that EVERY Linux user should know how to compile programs. That's not always true. In school they teach you the basics of computing, such as input and output devices, what are folders and files and how to manage them, and how to connect to the internet and use sites like Google to search for things, and such. They NEVER teach you how to compile programs.

I think even if looking up instructions in a README file is inappropriately/disgustingly/whatever easy to follow, some users are afraid of the command line, and would prefer a more user-friendly package such as a ZIP/RAR/DEB file.

I think the point of this post is to help the community, which is great. You are NOT helping when you say they are noobs.

If a user asks a silly question, politely send them in the right way, for example, linking to a post with more information, but if you say "LOL U R a n008!" you'll only scare them off and deprive this nice community of the most valuable opinion: that of the end users.

Thank you for your time to read this post.

Regards,
Diego Martínez <Kaeza>

If they are complete noobs, they shouldn't be compiling minetest, duh. Please do not tell me what I am talking about, I know what is going on, if you don't know what the hell a computer program is, or how to use a computer, why the f*** would you compile a program?

FLAME ON: This type of argument is not worth the bandwidth it takes to send it. It's illogical and poorly reasoned. The rest of the world agrees with me.
FLAME OFF

WHOA!!!!!
I didn't intend to start a "Shootout At the minetest Corral" when i briefly stood on my soapbox.
....and jordan4ibanez, I didn't mean to sound like i was lecturing You or ANYBODY. So i apologize if it came out that way.
As a teacher and longtime "Techie" , @ home & professionally, i admit i am a little sensitive about throwing names around, especially when it may discourage a new user from pursuing their new interests.

@ madchicken13 - I salute You for all Your compiling efforts for others and willingness to guide new users. (not to mention, I do like the minetest m13 version) Keep it up!

@calinou - *graywolf777 is looking back @ YOU* lol

madchicken13, did you read the whole README.txt?
Especially this:
Download minetest_game (otherwise only the "Minimal development test" game is available)
$ cd games/
$ wget https://github.com/celeron55/minetest_game/tarball/master -O master.tar.gz
$ tar xf master.tar.gz
$ mv celeron55-minetest_game-* minetest_game
$ cd ..

Because I can't see games/minetest/ in your build (I looked 0.4.3.zip)…

And do you know https://launchpad.net/~minetestdevs/+archive/stable and
https://launchpad.net/~minetestdevs/+archive/daily-builds exist?
