Christmas Minetest Wishlist

by Obiewan1111 » Wed Dec 19, 2012 21:29

So.. With Christmas coming up, and also some future feature suggestions arising, I compiled all of the ideas I had in mind for the next release.

Please post your own suggestions too!

Here they are:

  • Foreign Language formats/platforms.
  • Third Person Viewing, 360 degrees rotation.
  • Individual player skins, so that you upload one, and only one skin, which will be yours in every server.
  • Better creative mode inventory navigation, such as: http://minetest.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3933
  • Introduction of portals to places, such as the Nether in minecraft, maybe something like that.

Thank you, and Merry Christmas!

a mod already grants the third wish and the fourth.

Not sure if a mod could grant the first two.

Minetest is an engine.
The whole game is built out of lua scripts, even the default one.
I think what you mean is, that these feature should be in the default game.
My ingame name is "john", my IRC name is "john_minetest".
I am chef mod on this server: minetest.org : 30015(see here)

It already does, at least for a few languages.
It's not enabled by default, so you need to compile from sources.

+(0.5) I'm not quite sure I'll use it though.

360 Degrees rotation:
You can rotate the view all around the 3d character.

I wish that:
-minetest would get a better name
-used textured guis
-used the player's arm section of the skin as their arm
-Had the fonts set a big bigger
-had a way to use mods/textures/code while the server is running
-used a reload command for the things above (optionally)
-had a tutorial on how to make entity 3d models
-didn't delete entities on it's own
-allowed for client side particles to be used
-had a better default texture pack
-had a server list that you can save instead of adding your server in every time you want to go to a different one
-used your minetest.net account to log on
-stored your skin in minetest.net and the client fetched the player's skin from the website when a player joins
-that clients handled texture packs by default, and that using a server texture pack was optional
-mods could be stored in .zip files
-the focus of this game was making a good game, not a good game engine, because when you have a good game, an engine will follow
-that mobs will be used in the next update
-that terrain generation will be in lua, and very fast
-that it will be fast to generate structures in the terrain
-that you can use multiple lines in item descriptions
-that minetest would get a giant booming of popularity from c++ and lua devs to help improve the game
-that block friction will be incorporated, so player's slow down based on the block they're standing on, same with items
-that water physics would slow players down gradually, not instantly
-that better sounds will be used (hey i'll go get the sounds if that's needed)
-that the red damage indicator will be replaced by a head bob or something, maybe just an "OUCH!" sound
-that minetest wasn't a rolling release and had special updates
-that minetest automatically detected my controller
-that minetest had support for multilingual by default
-that it had a server gui instead of just terminal stuff
-that when you typed in localhost in the multiplayer it would just default to 127.0.0.1 to keep it the same on all systems
-that minetest's sun and moon would be textured, same with each star
-that the community would stop being a bunch of shitheads/trolls/whiners and saying that minetest is dying
-that items had some sort of animation in your inventory when you pick up one
-that your client's inventory (hotbar too) was handled completely by your client
-that when you accidentally click the background of your craft gui with an item, that it would do nothing, and would stop putting it back into your inventory
-that the background texture would stop being the original one which literally looks like diarrhea
-that torches would be in 3d
-that fire would be wall mounted so it doesn't look so random
-that lava and water would make stone and obsidian
-that obsidian near water would make blue obsidian
-that someone would make books that you can write in
-that the bookshelves would hold those books that you write in
-that shaders didn't just push the water block down 1/10th of a block, and the water block was naturally that size
-that the game had music
-that right clicking didn't put down tools
-that right clicking was an available function to make use of with tools and even interaction with nodes, opening doors, drawing back bows, right clicking mesecons buttons
-that blocks dropped items, and that you could suck up items like you do in minecraft
-that the camera.cpp file used a separate animation for placing nodes and digging, and seperate from digging with a tool and a node

And i'll think of more later
If you can think it, you can make it.

Please, no. Having a headless server is a great advantage. I can more or less agree with the rest.

My wishes:

- The possibility for mods to add custom animations (throwing mod is good, but without throwing animation it looks weird. Same for foods mod).

- Smart mobs that don't kill computers. I don't care if they are 3D or 2D.

- Better damage control.

- Hitting a mob should push it back.

- FOV for running.

- Shift + click to move a whole stack to / from inventory.

- Being able to click click click and hit a mob instead of having to wait to hit again, or at least don't allow to click too often. From the user's point of view, it just looks as if I'm hitting the mob but my hits are doing nothing, instead of being that hitting needs a cooldown time.

- Being able to hold the mouse button to continuously place blocks (although it would be great if this were togglable from the options, because I can see how this could get annoying for some users).

- Maybe having glass that breaks. Unless this is considered too much MC (I consider it more realistic, not MClike, but I wouldn't actually mind if this never made it into MT).

I may add more later as well.

  • Better documentation of network protocol
  • Client-based mods acting on a per-user basis(allows for bots and such)
  • Better access to graphics settings(as in FXAA, Direct3d on Windows vs OpenGL, etc)

1) http://minetest.net/forum/viewtopic.php?id=3590 is a project i did, it is a online skin selector that is compatible with minetest.net (if it was hosted on minetest.net). Just needs a mod to fetch the skin, and for it to be easily updated to support 3d skins

2) http://multa.bugs3.com/minetest/forum/viewmod.php?id=34

3) I hate that too

4) http://multa.bugs3.com/minetest/forum/viewmod.php?id=10

5) +1

6) item_drop mod

7) That would work in a number of ways

-> minetest.net has a master server list which can be downloaded, and players can look for servers in, but is not vital (can be turned off, or if minetest.net is down, there is still a private list)

-> users can add servers to their private list and save usernames for each one

But I want to play Minetest!

If you mean adding the option of a GUI for the server while maintaining the option for headless, then that's fine for me. I don't want to have to install X to run minetestserver.

Because Java on Windows has both a "console" loader (`java') and a no-console loader (`javaw'). On Linux, it's the other way around. If you want to see the "console" ("terminal" in Linux terms), you must either A) run from a real rerminal (such as without running X11) or explicitly run the program in a virtual terminal (such as `xterm' or `gnome-terminal').

If you want to run minetest without a console, you must do the following:
1) Work out the right options for your linker to enable the "windowed" subsystem under windows (under MinGW32 this is "-m windows").
2) Verify that no output stream functions write to the console, since on windows this will most likely cause the program to hang.
3) Patch CMakeLists.txt in the sources to enable an option to disable the console.

This may have already been done, but I don't really know since I rarely use Windows.

My wishlist:
- that someone does mobs that are no CPU killers
- An in-game mod manager that would download a .zip/.tar.gz, and unpack/install the mod.
- A complete nodebox editing environment.
- A canvas item for the GUI (to draw arbitrary graphics)
- Checkboxes for formspec (they may come in handy).
- Use gzip compression for communication (as a toggle option for servers)
- Portals between servers (c'mon RealBadAngel!)
- Moreores in the default game, and make MESE more rare than mythril.
- That someone fixes the entity attachment code
- Real NPCs

I'll think of more later.

That would require a lot of C++ code for AI and pathfinding, then it needs a Lua interface too so that you can actually add passive, neutral and hostile mobs.

-used your minetest.net account to log on

I don't know if it would be a good idea because:
-Minetest is getting bigger and bigger. Thousands of accounts would require lots of administration.
-If minetest.net is down, noone can log in/register new.
-All servers must download the database or have access to it.
On the other hand it would prevent you from guys logging in with your name and trolling around so you get the blame.
My ingame name is "john", my IRC name is "john_minetest".
