With Ubuntu, just try to play a file and if the codec is not already installed it will pop up with a menu for you to install it and make it work.

It may be better to compile it from source, because the version in the repositories is old. Or, if your using 64bit then I have a deb package from when I compiled it that I can
provide.

It should have most codecs by default. If a codec needed by a movie is not installed, the movie player will automatically install it for you.
As for flash, you must get the flash player from the adobe site.

Flash and MP3 codecs are automatically installed if you checked "Install third party software" when installing. If not, install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package.

Too bad it wasn't Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu but better imo). Either way welcome to the world of linux. Be careful or you may ditch Windows all together ;)
