FOSS gamedev and creative worlds

for some reason when trying to change the skin i have for the game. (playing singleplayer) It wont change. I take a skin from a minecraft skin and put it in the minetest_game>mod>default>models i put the png. picture in and rename it character. But then enter a game of mine it says failed to merge player. should i check the debug for something, am i doing something wrong?
Please help anyone.

are you playing dwarves game by any chance?
anyway, if you don't, try to install skin mod and try it. this should help.

Changing the skin in singleplayer is not very useful because you dont see yourself.

I know but wouldn't i be able to see my hand change. i hate the original hand. seems weird I know but still. Can i have the url to the skin mod?

Maybe a texture pack could help? When I tried the photorealistic textures from VanessaE, the hand changed into a very realistic hand.

the wieldhand is changed by putting an image called wieldhand.png in /textures/all, not by the skin.
