what a great new version. the return of the modding api is truly glorious, and the bucket shows off its possibilities nicely.
impressive floodings of the world with water and lava are possible and fun to play with. also good to see how well this all works.
its nice to watch the lava light up the caverns as it pours down or to create frozen like sculptures.
cant wait to see what people come up with in their mods, and visit different servers with different worlds!

Buckets should be in official Minetest IMO... like, made from 3 steel ingots.

huh? buckets are in minetest now, they are crafted from three steel ingots and allow you to pick up and pour water and lava.

...Are they included in a vanilla Minetest installation? That was my question.

Are they just in 0.4?

wow, this is a thread about v0.4, says so in the title, and buckets. yet all you ask is
buckets?
version?
so, yes they are in a vanilla install of minetest v0.4, and they have been implemented via the new modding api.
so, here is what i imagined this thread to be about: wow, we can mod stuff, seemingly complex stuff like a bucket tool as a lua script, without the need to read and write C++. Which to my mind is absolutely great.
Now these mods are server side, which i believe could give rise to "themed" minetest worlds. You could mod a sword that hits players and reduces their hp in a competitive survival world, or go crazy with nodes and textures to create a highly detailed model of some place...
so i really hope teleporting gets done via this new api and will eventually allow to teleport between servers, of which some will be a really different game than others via mods they have installed.

Now we need water to flow and push things, and lava to burn things. Right now all water and lava are for is decoration.

...Lava damages players, you know? And water also slow downs players.

Lava should destroy items dropped into it, and does it harm mobs? I don't think it harms rats. Water slows down players but not mobs and I think flowing water should actually push on players, mobs, and items.

Yeah lava only currently damages players and water only effects players too (as far as I know).
I agree lava should damage mobs and burn items (<- this would be useful to ditch unwanted items like in MC), as well as burn trees etc, same with water which should push players, mobs and items ^_^
