I've tried turning the camera update on and off but didn't notice and change. The clouds still moved, the water still flowed.

What does the camera update do and what impact does it have on performance or anything.

What is camera update good for?

It does NOT load new chunks without moving the player entity.

It doesnt add mapblocks to the rendering. Try hitting F4 and then turn arround.
