Firefly?

What ever happened to Fireflies?

I browsed the code and they're not being spawned anymore.
Any clue as to why?

Were they taking up too many resources?

You know I haven't even thought about those fireflies since I last make them for my texture pack. Since then, never seen them at all. I doubt they would harm the resource in anyway. I mean often times I run into a lot of rats.

But it would be pretty neat to have them back. Perhaps catch them with a net and use them as a light source of some kind.

Maybe a formula would be better too. A glass box with a firefly in it to make a lamp block (Glowstone).

The fireflies where a bit buggy and only spawned when you had the server in experimental mode, I did fix a lot of bugs with the fireflies, they used to spawn constantly and never die, as well as spawn inside blocks haha which I fixed on my fork in previous 0.3 but I think the code that spawns them got commented out when DM's where added.

Its on the to-do list to convert the mobs into lua scripts as part of the modding api I think, in fact you may already be able to force fireflies to spawn via a mod but I haven't looked at the modding api too much yet to know for sure.

Heck yeah! That'd be a great way of using them, plus we'd have a new tool...the net!
