Generally lag is not a problem with minetest, i own a fairly old windows xp desktop pc and do not have problems with lag. However when running certain mods i lose about 20-30 frames. The mod i am talking about is technic.
i am aware that some others have this issue too.
please share your tips with me and others
my tips
- disable shaders and tick preload item visuals
- try and load a world a few times over and over again, it helps
- walk around the area in your world so minetest saves the chunks and does not have to generate new ones.

Lag is not slow performance; lag is latency, slow performance is just slow performance.
There's a simpler fix too, since you're on a desktop: get a better graphics card. 8)

but what i was asking is is there any fixes that are quick and easy. like with minecraft you can dedicate a amount of ram to it, can you do that with minetest?
and also how would one get a better graphics card and install it?

Don't keep the flashlight in the hotbar. While it appears to be stressful server-side, its frequent updates might be inefficient for Irrlicht.

Not only Minetest can use all your RAM (it'll use the amount of RAM it needs), adding or allocating more RAM does not speed things up, it just prevents swapping. 1GB of RAM is enough to play Minetest without swapping.
Adding or changing the graphics card of your desktop isn't hard, you just need a powerful enough PSU and space in your case. But if your motherboard is really old and does not support PCI-E, you're out of luck, no recent graphics cards are in AGP today.

Do you know if SLI will help Minetest's performance?

Definitely disable the fire mod; It's plain useless, and may slow the server to a crawl if setting a forest/big house on fire.

Probably, but it's totally pointless, even a recent middle end graphics card will get you 100+ FPS easily.
