Give the Minetest core engine a new name

PostPosted: Wed May 01, 2013 01:10

After some discussion on IRC, we came to the conclusion that perhaps it was time to change the name of the project to avoid confusion with the game content that most folks have to download. There are no plans to rename minetest_game or the other Lua content generally used with the engine.

Here's the poll, on strawpoll.me because there are too many options for the in-forum one:

http://strawpoll.me/32807

Please note that these results are non-binding.

I don't give a flying fish for anything mining related. Seriously, it's supposed to be flexible freaking game engine. It should be able to support FPSes, MMOs, pretty much anything. Calling it anything mine-related is stupid, because then people get the Minecra* mindset. I've played Minetest and played with it for so long because it's flexible: let's change the name to reflect that.

InfiniTest, maybe?

It's interesting you should suggest that one, Likwid - at one time, the game/engine were called "mesetint".

I take back my votes and vote for mesetint

I approved Mese% as it new name.

%: Whatever people voted it for.
I for one keeping my Idea Mesetest but if not pick I, will make a Game mode for in the upcoming version.

Hey VanessaE how I add the Mesetest in the poll?

Lol backwards...

Actually none of us on IRC were necessarily aware of that thread.

As I have loved "communistcraft", I voted for: openminer, openmine, freemine.

Any name is fine for me, the important thing is that in the end we have a couple of gameplay shared and appreciated.

however revival: COMMUNISTCRAFT, it is a beautiful name

If I started a new project to be what Minetest is now, I'd maybe use derpxel or buildat or minegap. 8) But Minetest is good too.

FreeMine, because:
- it implies the game is free and open source
- it's a sandbox game (you can do whatever you want)
- it's fast to pronounce :P

WTF?! Changing the name is a really BAD idea. Minetest is getting popular and you don't have a better idea than renaming it? minetest.net for example is rank 229,391 (worldwide) now. Everyday multiple videos of Minetest are being uploaded to youtube, etc.

There is a "problem" with game and engine? ok, but then change the game structure. The current one is anyway senseless (build, minetest, minimal, survival). Kick minetest and minimal and the problem is solved.

-> That are my 2 cents about that!

I like FreeMine. I would also like LibreMine just as much. :P

I agree that the name "Minetest" needs to be changed. Not because of confusion necessarily, but because when I first saw "Minetest", I assumed by the name that it was some little experiment someone was doing, and that's certainly not the case.

Nothing is wrong with minetest, but for once the community is involved in a pseudo decision on specific invitation of an influential member (VanessaE ). So even if the question is totally irrelevant each expresses his opinion in a futile attempt to gain importance in the eyes of some core developper so that in the future he can involve him in the most important issues. We all want to feel listened to!

Please, if this comment is offensive: remove it.

+1
Although I would rather rename the games instead of removing them (for obvious backwards compatibility reasons). Just remove the removing of "_game" at the end of minetest_game in the engine. So every can see that minetest_game is not Minetest (the engine).

I don't see a damn reason why to change the name of minetest.Minetest seems to be a good name to be.

I don't really think this should be a sticky or anything though. It's just a suggestion like anything else. Chances are we don't rename anything to anything.

It's funny though how every american seems to be completely uncomfortable with the word "test", while for every other part of the world it's remarkably fine.

There's the Mine thing again. Dangit, the core should enable ANYTHING. FPSes, RTSes, MMOs... Why should we be limited to mining?

Half of Americans have lower than average IQ. Go figure that out. :-)

Well, I, at least, always use and hear the word "test" to mean some sort of examination; for example, a test to see how efficient the function "foo" is, or a test to see how well someone understands trigonometry, or a test to see how much you can push someone's buttons before they get really pissed off. For example, Debian Testing is a branch of Debian that is not ready for a stable release; it's being checked for bugs and such.

It looks like "test" can also mean "challenge" according to Wiktionary, and I guess that's where the name "Minetest" comes from, but that's not a way I or anyone I know uses the word, and it's not listed in any other dictionary I know of (I tried Oxford, Merriam-webster, American Heritage, and Dictionary.com).

IF YOU DID CHANGE THE NAME: THE API WOULD FOLLOW.

So all mods would automatically become broken. There is no point to this whatsoever.

Another one of the bad ideas the lead devs have.

You change the name: you fuck up all Google links and have to do all of the SEO AGAIN.

Please listen for once, I know it's hard....
