It recent times, I found out about a project that is attempting to add DirectX 11 to Irrilicht. A link to a page about the project is below:

If this project succeeds, what benefits would be gained?

That general attitude is why Irrilicht never went beyond DirectX 9. Projects that update the graphics drivers available to an engine should be encouraged, not crushed into oblivion. Don't hold the same attitude towards that project that PureZC holds towards Minetest.

A project like this would be beneficial to Windows users, due to the fact that Direct X is better suited for their computers than OpenGL is.

While there are performance improvements, I believe it is hard to use a DirectX version newer than 9 in open source software because of legal issues.

It's not like OpenGL performance is lacking these days anyway...

There are legal issues against it? That is a very big problem. I will consider getting video cards based on how they deal with OpenGL from now on.

Where did you find out about these legal issues?
