Nope, there's no joystick support for Minetest. What you can do, though, is use a program to convert joystick axes and buttons to mouse and keyboard controls. Joy2Key is a command-line program of that sort that works on GNU/Linux, QJoypad is a graphical one that works on GNU/Linux, and JoyToKey is a popular graphical one for Windows. I'm sure there are others.

There is currently an
open bounty on this missing feature. The pot for it is currently at $50- bored coders, here's a chance to earn some Steam games!

I used to use XPadder with my old fake PS2 controller. It was good.

qjoypad (google it) - works great - jstest is also helpful in getting the button and axis numbers for the qjoypad layout

No need to say that. Some people learn different things better than others.

Softonic distributes malware (or at least uses bad business practices). Don't link to them, Mkay?

I have never thought of how cool it would be to use a ps3 controller on a computer game like this , wow... it would be pretty neat

Native support is always better. And splitscreen would be really cool...
