Possibly.

Minetest mods do not work like Minecraft's.

If you took away all mods (even the default, vanilla ones that come with Minetest) then there would be no content at all in the game, the world would be blank: no nodes. All content is defined by mods: even the main menu (well, not a mod, but fixed lua scripts)

So adding a 3d torch as a mod is not really a hack, or cheating. Minetest is built for modding.

(at least it is now, it was originally built for survival, iirc)
