1. Nothing in the default game. 2. Yes, there can be shaders. It's just that no one has made any. Except Bump Mapping by RealBadAngel (which is in default)

Wow! Thank you for such a fast reply!

I hope someone will make a shaders mod for Minetest one day.

1) shaders are not mods and are infact gpu instructions on how to make the world look better.

2) only opengl users will get access to the shaders, users who are using direct3d are out of luck.

3) shaders create a noticible performance hit, as people the latest gpus maybe only able to use them without losing performance. (Not entirely sure on how NEW they need to be...)

2) No, users of direct3d are not in general "out of luck", but we need someone to write HLSL shaders while opengl uses GLSL shaders. (the default shaders atm)

Out of luck referred to the current state of shaders

No, that is wrong.
The shaders that are currently used control daylight (which gives a smooth day-night cycle), fog, brighten the topside of nodes, and (as you already said) allow to use normalmaps.

Q: Why do people continue asking questions which are already answered in the community wiki?
A: Because there is no sticky thread linking to it in this forum.

I think the song in the YouTube video below gives a feel of what some of the developers' lives are like right now. For example, RealBadAngel is very busy with work lately, so be very patient when it comes to the new shaders.
