Newbie to Minetest.

Hello, My name is Bill. As you can guess I'm a newbie. So please be gentle. I've been bit by the bug like the rest of you all. So trying to get my minetest all set up and functioning as well as I can. I'll be doing my reading and research before asking typically dumb newb questions. So far my biggest issue has been getting any of the mods to work for me. In particular the mob ones. It just doesn't feel right playing and building without weather issues and critters to raise and monsters to hide from.
I've tried different linux distros and so far have been using one entitled sparky linux game over. It's pretty much a debain distro and has been working well enough for me. (Any other suggested versions are welcome)
I even have a destop set up with W7 just to play on if the linux plan doesn't pan out.
Thanx and again be gentle.LOL.

Your first step is to state which version of Minetest you are using. I recommend the development version of Minetest on GitHub.

Ok not a prob. I'll go get it. Right now. Going to try this time on an Acer Aspire x3400g running W7 Ulti in 64 bit. But ultimately the plan is to have both a desk top(Probably this old I-mac that's collecting dust and running linux) and a laptop. Dedicated to minetest.

I use Xubuntu, myself. It's extremely well-supported and pretty much just works and stays out of the way most of the time. Plus, having things like PPAs helps out quite a bit.

When something doesn't work, I suggest you do the following:

Post your system specs so that we know that your specs are enough to play Minetest.
Post your OS.
Post the version of Minetest you're playing.
Paste the last few lines of log output from debug.txt.

For mods, after you download them and place them in the mods folder, remember to rename them to their proper mod name. To know the modname of the mod, check the forum topic. It should be [mod]Topic title[version number] [modname].

The modname within [ ] is what you need.

Also, welcome to Minetest! Don't be scared, we won't bite! As long as you do your homework and surf the forums before posting, everything is cool! If you don't, we will just post links!

EDIT: ALSO 600th POST!

Did you place the mod in the mods/ folder, and enable it in the game?

I have multiple os's on swappable HD's . So making a Xbuntu is simple enough. Not a big fan of the Ub os itself, however use a few spin offs. Really like LXLE right now.
So I guess I'll build a Xbuntu in a HP Pavilion dv4-1125 with 4 gigs ram. The same machine currently houses a W7 ultimate 64 bit system right now. I've got a few minetest versions there. I've been "collecting" copies and trying to get the hang of it. I do know that M/S and Linux are different in how they work. So for now the plan is to work with the Linux versions first (since it's so easy to scrap and rebuild), then try in M/S.
So for now the project will be Xubuntu on the above listed laptop. My new learning machine.

Yes sure did. I get massive errors. So plan to start from scratch. OS and all.

Trying like heck NOT to be lazy and just try to find someones finished product. My intent is to ultimately have a "game" dedicated machine. With minetest as close to m/c as I'm able to build.

Using my Mint machine to download and burn the Xubuntu iso right now. Be back after the os is installed.

Links are good. I like links. They tend to cut thru the junk and streamline the process.
