minetest_game will no longer be developed

by Casimir » Tue Apr 15, 2014 09:36

Note: minetest_game is the default game contend. Minetest itself is the engine. Work on the engine continuous.

Declared some month ago on github.

I think when developers stop developing there should at least be an official announcement.
@Mods: Please move this to the News section.

That's the Minetest engine, not Minetest_game.

Sorry, but I'm new and don't know a lot of things. What is the difference between them?

The engine is programmed in C++, uses Irrlicht, OpenAL and many more. It's what lets you run games, sometimes called subgames, which are programmed in Lua.

minetest_game was the official game for the Minetest engine; it is still available but now in maintainance mode.

This is one reason why there wasnt a post in the news section.

I think I should compile a book on PilzAdam's sarcastic replies.

You can try, but nothing will get in. That is the point.

They want lots of subgames for Minetest, which is why the freeze is in progress. Go ahead and develop it!

You are right. Better keep it a secret. I guess this topic can be deleted.
Is there already a decision on which subgames will be in the next release (if any)?

speaking of minetest_game, it would be nice if a git sub module was used instead of having to git clone it. (that's my opinion anyway)

I think we should start a discussion (in another thread) about what happends to the downloads.

Will minetest_game be removed, or should we include one or two of the best games by default? Because most people expect that they can play when they downloads the packages from the website.

Minetest_game is where all the default:stuff lives. As a container for that it is feature frozen but not dropped and probably will not be dropped in the near future. (0.5.0 may be a different story)

A discussion about what extra games should be included has been started several times on IRC but as it seems not much has been decided.

I think I agree with the current approach. Keep the common codebase seriously light, and allow people to download mods to that.
