Mapgen V7 rivers

Hi. What’s your opinion on Mapgen V7’s rivers?

My opinion is this: I fucking hate them, because they mercilessy cut through intact landscapes and mess with biomes. And they aren’t even really rivers, they are actually like canyons and they create cliffs everywhere. That’s because the water height is equal to sea levels. Nothing against canyons but when they can cross every biome, it gets annoying. Sure, they sometimes really look nice, but it is a pain in the ass to cross them.

By the way, since I hate those rivers, can someone please explain me how I can disable them?

Not sure if that works, but you could try to add this line to minetest.conf:
mgv7_spflags = mountains, noridges

Unsurprisingly, this does not remove rivers. This is what I think of when I hear “ridge”:

Yeah but dev wiki says that it defines both ... and if I would have read the whole description" Currently, not user-accessible" :(

At least it is possible to disable it with Lua. Here is the relevant code, for those who are interested:
Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
Code: Select all
minetest.register_on_mapgen_init(function(mapgen_params)
   mapgen_params.flags = "nov7_ridges"
   minetest.set_mapgen_params(mapgen_params)
end)

This snippet overrides ALL the mapgen flags.

Wuzzy, the creator of mgv7 would agree with you, he's very unhappy with the rivers, and the rest of mgv7 too, he's slowly working on re-writing it.

I like it, but make it more customizable.
