skin tool

I'm searching for it, but not finding it.
Isn't there a tool out there for creating and viewing minetest skins?

Minetest skins are just a 64x32 png, I think, but trying to picture how everything wraps around is not easy for someone graphically stupid like me.

Windows users (or MONO has known to work in it, I've tested);

Other operating systems, no clue.

I found SkinEdit which works fine in linux.

Next question. Minecraft skins allow for a hat, can Minetest handle the hat or does that need to always be left blank?

And how do I get single player to load a different skin from the default so I can test a skin?

Hats should work.

Replace "character.png" in "default/models/" or use a skins mod.

Hats work, my custom skin uses that layer as part of the head design.

As for replacing the "character.png" file, make sure to make a backup of the original for something to go back to if you need to reset it.

I made a copy of that file and renamed it "character (defult).png" for the back up, then overwrote the other with my custom one.

I use Skincraft on Kongregate. It works fine on Linux and Windows because it's web based.

Also, you can try searching the Skindex to find a pre-made skin that you like. It also has a editor that works pretty well (my machine is too slow for that editor).

I remember that Newgrounds based editor (in the Kongregate link), it was where I started my custom skin, I then did some fine tuning with a free image editor program.

If you don't have an image editor, just do a search for GIMP or Paint.net, both programs are free to download and will work with PNG files.
