-Learn about Blender uv unwrapping (google is good).
-Mark your edges to be seams ctrl+e --> mark as seam.
-When you are satisfied, select all your mesh and press u for unwrap. You may want to choose "smart uv project" from the list.
- If you have one of your views as uv editor, you will see your unwrapped mesh laying over your texture image. Then move the uv islands around or reshape them to make best use of your texture.
- in order to paint directly on your model you need your target texture as a material.

Here's a bunny I'm working on to demonstrate:
Image

In the top 3d view (edit mode) you can see the red lines on the edges. They are marked seams. Marked seams are how the model will be "cut up" to be laid out or mapped to your image.

You can see the many cut up parts of the bunny model below in the uv image editor. I have it VERY cut up to make use of as many pixels as possible. The texture is 32x32 and I used all but 12 pixels. I might have plans for them.

In the right in the properties view. I have a diffuse material set up. In that material is a texture. My bunny texture. That is needed so the paint functions will know where to write the info to when you paint your model directly. And so you can see your edits on the model in real time.

Hope that helps :)

Blender Cookie has a great collection of Blender tutorials on their youtube channel. They have one about UV Unwrapping here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ha2rFR6qO0

You might be seeing more of him and his cousins in Minetest soon :)

@ExterDad: Have you been recording this, or writing up steps on how to do it? I could use some help, as I am an excellent modeller, but pretty bad 'texturer'

@philipbenr Ummm... not really? I do have some notes in a text file. But not really informative to anyone but me. I've been toying with trying to make a Blender/Minetest tutorial or two that others may find useful as a starting point. But I'm a horrible teacher.

BS. If you can find a good video recorder and just say what the heck you are doing, or even just record, you are better than a lot of guys out there. Plus, I have seen a lot of guys who say they are bad at textures in blender. It isn't just me. Plus, this is also for Minetest, not some other weird project which can have it's own particulars. All I am trying to say is that it would be great for some more modding resources.

^^ You crack me up :)
My grammar is poor. My slang is overused. And often my thoughts aren't clearly converted to text. Not to mention that what I have learned is from trial and error, and a whole lot of Google. So sharing my "knowledge" is a bit intimidating as chances are high that I don't use "best practices."
Now that I have put out my disclaimer. I will make a effort to publish more things that may help others with using Blender for Minetest.
For starters, here's a little clip I made the other day to demo my elusive T-rex for Minetest's walk cycle for the OP a few days ago. Not much teaching to see, but kinda cool to see, I think.

If I wouldn't be stepping on toes I could probably toss a few videos together on the topic of unwrapping and texturing. I'm already making minetest videos anyways.

No worries at all! I'm the reluctant one :)
Blender/Minetest howto's are hard to find. We need all that we can.

I'll try and put something together as soon as possible and then link it here.

@ExeterDad. I just watched your t-rex video. All I can say is WOW!
If you make videos don't worry about being perfect. If you look anything like your avatar then please don't show your face.

That is what I love about this community. People put a lot of work into helping others and offering great stuff without expecting anything in return. That is true humanity!

Exporting first video now, will upload just as soon as that is finished. Starting work on the second video, planning a third yet as well.

@Don, I don't know about not expecting anything in return, I'm expecting to see a whole bunch of happy faces, and fantastically textured meshes in Minetest.

Heh! The makings of a good signature.

My wife's had to wake up next to it for the last decade and a half. Surely you'd survive.

And here you guys go. :)

This is just really basic, the second video is uploading now youtube is saying about another hour until it finishes, and then it will have to process. I'm heading to bed now, so I won't have that posted until the morning, but if you happen to be in a different time zone you can always just check my youtube channel to see if it's finished. My channel is linked in my signature.

These look pretty cool Nathan. I'm going to watch these since I have always had problems with unwrapping...
