Just wondering, when will the latest version of minetest be put on ubuntu software center? The one I tried is really outdated.

With the next Ubu release I think. It should come out in the October, as Ubuntu has a half-year release program. This is the drawback of having a stable distro (in Arch Linux, for example, packages are REALLY up to date, but it affects stability of the distro and it likes to break down), the only solution for this - use PPAs.

If you are using Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) then use the "precise" daily build PPA from https://code.launchpad.net/~minetestdevs/+archive/daily-builds/+packages

1. Go to the URL above
2. Left-click on "minetestc55_2012blah,blah,blah~precise1"
3. After that unfolds more information, look towards the bottom for the "Package Files" section.
4. Look for the two links that end in ".deb"
5. If you are running a 64-bit system, left-click the one that ends in "_amd64.deb"
6. If you are running a 32-bit system, left-click the one that ends in "_i386.deb"
7. The next step will ask you where you want to save this file. "Desktop" is usually the most convenient.
8. After downloading, double click on the file. This will start "Ubuntu Software Center".
9. Once "Ubuntu Software Center" is up and running, click on the "Install" button to install the latest daily build of Minetest and add the repository to your "Software Sources..."

10. Whenever a new daily build is released for Ubuntu 12.04, all you have to do is click in the upper right corner on the gear-like icon in Ubuntu, the select "Update Software" or "Software Up to Date" (it changes depending if there is an update available or not)

11. Then click on the "Check" button. This will check for any available updates according to the repositories you system is configured for.

12. If there are any updates they will be displayed and then click on the "Install Updates" button. This may take awhile depending on how many updates there are and how big they are.

13. When its done it may tell you to restart the computer.

14. Repeat this process of updating Ubuntu after the computer reboots and settles until all the updates have been installed.

Keep these instructions handy, especially the top part concerning downloading the *.deb file. October 18th, 2012, the next stable version of Ubuntu will be released, Ubuntu 12.10 "Quantal Quetzal". Check the Minetest daily build website periodically. It may take a couple days after the release of the new Ubuntu for the package maintainer to get the "Quantal" version of the Minetest daily build ready. Once it shows up in the "Package Files" section, go through all the steps above once again.

When you are more comfortable with Linux, experiment with compiling the latest version of Minetest yourself. This will mean doing battle with the terminal in command-line gibberish but it will get you the very latest changes celeron55 makes.

I think what he meant was actually update the package in the software center so people don't have to go through all that just to play.

Hehe... Yeah, I can get a bit long winded from time to time. :)- Sorry, just trying to be thorough.

All thoses steps setup for a 3-click, system-wide update. Once they are in place you don't have to do them again until the next version of Ubuntu (which comes out once every six months of so). Just 3 button clicks and Minetest is kept up-to-date with the latest daily build and all of Ubuntu is kept up-to-date (hardware drivers like video and audio as well as most Linux software that is installed).

Old-hat for experienced Linux users, I know.

I remember what it was like when I first began switching to Linux; that's why I write as detailed as I do at times. ;)

Hello, I am new to this game, the forums, and still a little green behind the ears with ubuntu. I got this game about 3 weeks ago and I thoroughly enjoy it. I am running into a bit of a snag with updating it, however, without uninstalling it and reinstalling it with the newer version. I followed your directions and the software center comes up with an error message saying it won't install. It is something to do with broken pipes and one of my folders for minetest being unaccessable. I also tried to do all this through the terminal, but to no avail. I have looked at about 15 different sites and methods of doing this, but most of them say the same thing which is to uninstall and reinstall. I don't want to do this because I don't like the idea of having to get rid of all the work I put into this every time I want to update it. I don't know what information you may need, but I have ubuntu precise, 32bit system, and the software center minetest currently. I have spent about 24 hours trying to get this to work and I am at my wits end. I would really love some help with resolving this issue and I appreciate your time and effort.
