Lava pools / like water

by roku » Thu Jul 04, 2013 17:38

So after playing around with water buckets and making ponds I decided to make a small lava pool and found that the lava wasn't spreading like water. It’s a liquid like water so I don’t see why it doesn't spread the same.

Lava was made not renewable a while ago. It's meant to make it harder to get obsidian.

You can re-enable it via a mod.

Well obsidian doesn't occur naturally anyway. In order to get it you have to carry your own buckets of water -- which already regenerate -- 1 by 1, tediously, and combine them with lava. I can kind of see how having lava at the surface makes this more convenient but the fact that you can't mine stacks of 99 -- you have to make every single obsidian yourself, separately, 99 times, in order to get a stack of 99, makes it rare regardless how lava behaves. You can also just as easily bring your own water underground and create a lake to do this anyway.

On the other hand if the feature were added I think it would make the game more fun, specifically because you could have your own lava lakes and stuff like that at the surface.

Also thanks for pointing out the mod idea. I'm playing on a server and already suggested it to the server owner. Sense it is a mod it would be pretty easy to incorporate into the main game, would it not?

What are you talking about? What you're saying is each bucket makes one obsidian, well yes but with if infinite you can generate it from a 4 block generator using two source blocks. Id rather it be a bit of a challenge yeah?

i mean a generator is the "cheap way out". Making sure you have a bucket of water on you is a nice little challenge, even though you can make 20+ obsidian with a bucket of water its only the source blocks that give obsidian which means you are sacrificing a lava source block for obsidian.

This leaves the miner thinking "do i want a bucket of source lava or obsidian" thus adding a challenge to mining. Personally to start with i didnt like the change but realized in survival mode it adds a whole new element to the game.

Well I don't see why you don’t make your 4 block generator underground. Just let water flow into a large pit of lava. It’s not like it’s rare. It’s far easier to get lots and lots of obsidian below ground than it is to build a lava pool above ground, being that you have limited inventory so can only carry so many lava buckets.

It's not so much a gameplay choice as it is an inconvenience or an annoyance.
