Trust me, I spent all my day on it... for a crappy result with the formspecs. Otherwise I would not post a new topic and push a PR instead. So I prefer let that to more talentuous people ;)

I don't really like it, it doesn't fit with the current Minetest menu style, (that I love) ¿Maybe something more minimalistic?

Kind of a quick design I made. Bold effect is for hovered buttons, btw.
Clicking singleplayer could open a panel that would be a world select/create screen, multiplayer would show the list, etc. Settings would be for game settings and texture packs, etc.
The background (in theory) could be changed by texture packs, the blur effect could be done via shaders or something.

I agree. The menu isn't very well organized, and imo it doesn't look very good either.

I like the image flags idea. I think more servers should be visible on the list at once (higher window). When a server is full, its player count could be written in orange, grey if empty.

Why not have it where in the settings to make it where the player can determine all of this. Examples: Max Servers Visible on List = 1-25, and for the menu let the player pick the style they like best??? I think give the players the freedom to choose what their game looks like would be quite interesting.

I don’t know what Freeminer did, but I think of SVG images (better scaling) for everything visible in the menu … and a way to freely position and scaling them on a percent basis (maximum flexibility when scaling) – But having PNGs for everything would be fine, too :)

Relevant idea, but not possible with the formspecs. Scaling them is a pain.

I'm working on a dropdown list for alternating dark or light themes, in the settings tab. But not sure to succeed...

This looks much better than the current.
EDIT: Okay. The bg_tab_*.png images are not optimal because the tabs can have other dimensions in other languages.

I don't really like it.
The gradients look too harsh, the logo seems meh, and the fonts are still really thin.
What happened to this concept?

Hopefully buried. I don’t like it at all. Looks like from the eighties :)
But still: The menu stuff needs a complete re-write in my opinion …

I don't think that this 'new' look has changed anything but BG. So I don't care if it is to be/already was added.
That one from the 90-ties (Mario hit Japan only in 1986, duh) better suits my taste.
But that oldie doesn't really change one more important thing than a BG: the meaning of "*CPD" is not clear for a newcomer.
FM has tooltips AND icons. MT thinks that its users are red-eyed people of Linux...
So...
Menus-shmenus...
Bring back the localization Sapier had devoid us of, fix utf8 (FM has done it long ago. In fact the only thing was needed was to check every place where a conversion happens) and use some MC-like font (there are many of those with CC-BY-SA licence).
If you want I can make one myself with ENG and CYR symbols and release it under WTFPL so MT would be able to add more characters for French, Deutsch, Japanese katakana & hiragana, etc.
Then and only then one should change the look of the main menu.
Note, that's only my opinion (ppl tend to thing I'm clamoring smth).
