How about making a game launcher which is able to start game, download and update latest minetest and mods ?
And more stuff could be included like ircchat inside etc...

What, like the main menu?

You can update mods. Alerting users of new Minetest versions would be interesting, but auto-updating isn't a good idea due to the multitude of platforms we support. Installers for Windows would be good.

Cant launcher determine the system / or we choose the version manually and update ?

Java is avaible on all systems. linux/windows/android

a java launcher can work well for all maybe?

I am not expert at programming so sorry if the suggestion is silly :s

It's about being able to get a new copy of Minetest for your platform. Many Linux operating systems have their own app stores and downloading methods, and it would be hard to support them all. I doubt any core developers would want this. It is good for ease of use though.

Launcher can update the game over browser or on its own so why we need appstore

you can check this as a example

OH GOD NO!

Well, maybe have another tab in the menu where you can check whether your game and maybe mods are up to date, however, I hate the minecraft launcher because it's just so stupid and pointless.

The problem is, there are people who use in-developement builds and those come from other community members.
Linux users can build their own binaries, so there's no need for an updater.

I think a Launcher is a very good idea! (I had the same idea)
I mean all the Linux distributions has old Minetest versions!
  • Ubuntu 14.10: MT 0.4.10
  • Debian wheezy(stable (from 2011)) MT 0.3.1
  • Debian jessie (next stable)MT 0.4.10
  • Debian sid (unstable) MT 0.4.11
If we had a Launcher, the Linux distributions would just have the Launcher and everyone sees when a new version comes out and is up to date!

But who want to programm this?!

Oh, I forgot it is much easier and faster than to clone the git-reposetory, do the cmake commands, wait untill the compiler has finished, …

I don't get the point of a launcher. I just want to have the game start immediately, and not have to wait for it to check for updates like in Minecraft.

You can start MT normal too!
And you don't have to use the launcher!
Would it be so bad, if there was a launcher too?

It would be nice if there was a tab in the menu for checking for updates, and an option to have it update automatically, but I think a separate launcher is pointless.
