So we should build a list of mods and minigames so that Minetest can compete with Minecraft!

is this a list of all currently existing mods, or just mods that people want to be made?

The later (although many of the things on the list already exist). And it will be pretty hard to maintain. A wiki article would be more beneficial for long term maintenance.

But this is categorized as "A personal Project" by the wiki mods (Calinou IIRC) so i can't help that.

I don't want to compete with MC.

I think minetest is already better than minecraft. Maybe not the default game, but just the fact that you can easily create mods makes MT better than MC.

but compete? IDK...

Minetest will definitely outlive minecraft, because it's open source and can be updated by anyone, while minecraft will eventually die after it stops being updated.

so to compete we should copy everything they have? I don't like that idea. I bet the lawyers of MS do though.

No they don't care. Gameplay is not protected by law. Textures etc. is something different.

I dislike the idea to copy everything.
The problem is just - Minecraft is a much bigger idea factory.

Taking some not-so-popular ideas can't be bad but porting/re-writing is 1) not original and 2) totally impossible to finish in an appropriate time with the current community.

pff

whatever, but I do

If we copy we are a copy,
if we follow their path we discover nothing new.
I would rather have minetest explore places and ideas on it's own accord, in it's own style, in it's own speed.

Having said that I think it legit to get inspiration elsewhere ...
so here is my not very complete list of games, apps or programs to get inspired by or that have some standard we ought to try to reach (in no specific order):

Die Siedler 3/4 - manufacturing chains, transport systems, AI-led other players, custom map creating, quest scripting
Widelands - eternal map-tiling-wraping
Ceasar - functioning city organisation
GTA - ingame radio, vehicle-physics, wardrobe (not quite there yet)
Hover (old MS Demo) - bumper car physics
Minecraft - animal breeding, waterfalls, carts (ours should at least be that good), soundtrack-style
Second Life / OpenSim - wardrobe-system, server-grid-system and ingame server transfer
SimuTrans / openTTD - scheduled rail traffic system ;-P, hightmap import
Planet Pinguin Racer - hightmap import, sliding physics
Asteroids / Space Invaders - shootshootshootdontletthemgetthrough
Platypus / Dark Oberon - Unique grafical design
Battle for Wesnoth - Quest scripting system. information screens
The Forest - The survival guide as crafting guide and list of blueprints
Farm Simulater - harvesting a tree is really fun, farming machines
Spore - creature creator
Glest - maybe borrow some figure animations?
Marble - show the map
OSM-GPS-KLM - maps, waypoints
Atomic-Time - realworld Time display
Celestia / Stellarium - Animated and scriptable sky
KchmViewer(or any text viewer) - structured text file viewer as ingame help system
MLCad - out of game Schematic editor
LDView / WOW-Modelviewer - out of game schematic viewer
WOW-Modelviewer / Irrlicht Meshviewer - Meshviewer
Sketchup / Meshlab - Mesh editor (get things done in seconds what it takes months to learn in Blender)
Padman - ingame humor, FPS
ScapeMaker - Mapgen with errosion by water simulation

ok, take most with a grain of salt and get inspired

(if anybody knows a good garden simulater/editor, not farming, go and add that)

That is the essence of the answers to OPs initial post.

But the beauty of Minetest is that it allows games to change many aspects of the game mechanics.

There is nothing wrong in implementing mod ideas from MC.
Minetest will never be a MC Clone. But if you - Consortium - want a 1 to 1 clone of MC with MT technology, i recommend making your own subgame or helping other MC style games (like Clonecraft and the others).

You can make a list about great ideas. But that doesn't make MT move in a direction that emulates MC. But it may be an inspiration for mod creators to implement some of the cool ideas and game creators to incorporate those mods.

To all the others, please don't discourage his work. It is nice to see what MC player want/expect.

I think a MT to MC mod/mod item "translation" table in the wiki would be helpful, so that new MT player coming from MC don't request all those mods we already have because they don't find them because of the structure of this community (which is quite different).

Minetest is already a MC clone. We have similar worlds, crafting, graphics and blocks. Our gameplay is no where near as good, as polished. Minetest gives us barely anything, and then expects us to make our own game. Our only selling points is that it is FOSS (which isn't really a selling point) and the modding (which really takes away from making Minetest a good game).

That is fine by me, but if more people join this game, it would be fun!

That is the spirit that i have when i make the list. Better make it earlier that later

List first, make later. Plan ahead, and dive deep to the sea of ideas.
Everything is a remix, my friend. It is just how we can modify that makes us special.

^ This guy knows what to do, and i am thankful that he knows what direction it is going. Even the Minecraft mods were stolen from these games (see GTA, Mirror's Edge, Assasin's Creed, etc.)

Make a list of mod ideas and descriptions, and update the list often (Dedication)
Let coders fill in the blanks, and increase the library of minetest (Replication)
Compete with Minecraft to be the best in variety and speciality (Competition)
Gather enough new people to join the Minetest community (Inspiration)
Educate people about programming and FOSS software (Education)
To make Minetest a students learning staple (Transformation)

I have been on minetest for over a year. I have played minecraft for a total os maybe 20 minutes. I make mods that I think improve mintest. i do not make mods that are like minecraft.. (except for a couple that my daughter wanted me to make0
i am not a great modder but I do think that Minetest is its own game. It is developed by people who have something more than profit in their mind. it is good hearted people making a game with no expectation or profit and maybe a hope of a thank you.
That is what makes minetest a great game. Real people making a game for real people with zero expectation of making money at it.

Minecraft actually has a poop mod-and not JUST poop! Poop ingots, poop swords, poop pickaxes, poop axes, and you count it!

At least Minetesters aren't that dumb.
