i have searched across the web for fun and have found on many sites, even minecraft's forums that people are saying minetest is better than minecraft, i believe that the only thing holding minetest back is that not many people know about it (compared to how many people should)

Minetest Game can't be finished, because there's no established goal... or more like, the goal is for development to be organic/chaotic, driven by the conglomerate of views each of the devs has about what minetest_game is, often following conflicting directions.

See this log from irc: http://irc.minetest.ru/minetest-dev/201 ... #i_4400292

I'm hoping some subgame gets popular with a more stable direction. But since minetest_game is bundled with the engine this is not likely to happen (often people assume minetest = minetest_game, like in this post), other subgames are always gonna be the second install, or more like big modpacks/ total conversion.

The devs said they want to bundle another subgame.. Maybe this would help. But IMHO it would be better if they don't bundle anything (not even minetest_game) and instead give more love to the main menu, add a section to download all the games posted in the forum from the client and making it more user friendly to download and start a game. If you only want to play multiplayer on a server you don't even really need to download any subgame anyway, why bundle a whole set of them.

I think that minetest will have a hard time gaining more player because it look like minecraft, so people will immediately think that it is minecraft clone and forgot about it. Until we have outstanding feature, there won't be much attention. I have read about mt on mc forum, and most people say it is mc clone and should be taken down.

That's another reason why minetest_game shouldn't be included by default. It already looks too much like Minecraft and it gives the image of being the only thing that Minetest represents. If you had to download it separately at least you'd know it's not the same thing, and you'd have the chance to see that there are other games and Minetest is capable of much more.

Also.. I doubt it'll happen but having minetest_game be so similar could potentially bring legal issues. I know the risk is minimal but if it wasn't bundled and it was instead just yet another community-driven subgame there would be no risk at all. You could always blame it on the community, not the Minetest project.

The biggest thing (in my opinion) that MT needs is a goal, is it game that is built upon it's own game engine? Or is it just a game engine? Should the default game (if there is one) be a base or a complete game?

The devs need to make a goal, I get the feeling that MTs development will go much smoother after that.

maybe a better modding api as minecraft still has cool mods that are inpossible in the current api of minetest
