Should Mese do something different?

Since Mese is supposed to be a kind of "supernatural" materiel, shouldn't it do something different, even strange?
Maybe a Mese pickaxe could turn any node that you right click into a Meselamp, and maybe the Mese sword could poison the punched player?

Celeron55 said somewhere that it's an alien mineral.

well, mese makes mesecons work ...
you just put some mese into a flower and it becomes a power plant with infinite energy supply.

If you put 4 mese blocks around a ruby block, an explosion happens and an antimese crystal appears. You can use it to make very fast, stable picks and an antigravity generator.
You can also use mese to craft teleporters.
Try out Zeg9's mods.

I agree that mese can be used for so much more. The thing to remember is that Minetest is a basic game/engine that is meant to be modded. It is not meant as a full game on it's own. That is what makes Minetest great. You can make minetest what ever you want by adding mods.
The thought that Minetest should be a full game is something that I disagree with. I think it should be avery basic game and people have to add mods to make it the way they like. Minetest has some really great server owners that make Minetest great. In single player I love being able to set it up the way I like it to be. I have a couple worlds with mobs and a few other mods that make them great survival worlds. I have others that are for building. The freedom to make the game the way I want it to be is what I think is what makes Minetest great.
With mese, there are many mods that use it for many things. It is no different then many other things in the default game. The items are there but do very little. Mods use those item to do many things. Mese is used in many mods for special things. Mesecons is an excellent example. The more that the default game uses the items the less mods will be able to. If you give mese a specific purpose in the default game you might make some mods loose there meaning. I think it is best to leave it as it is.

I always think of mese as an energy source like energons or dilithium crystals.
I think Don is right though, its best left up to modders to add new weirder content and effects

Yeah I always think of how Minetest got it name and, your brief reply made me think of this.
Mine (Talking about Me. E.g. It's all mine) Test (You test OR It's your Test. E.g.Add new contact too my Test). So futhermore speaking I'm getting at, is it your Game you expand it as far can, with mods and you test and make it yours.
_______________________Minetest and, like always keep testing.

Same, I don't think of minetest_game as a game, but more of a testbed to base other mods/subgames on.
But it shouldn't be default; people coming from MC will think it's bad because you need mods, and leave MT forever.

maybe there should be an insanely easy way to download any mod on the forums, and a way to tell new players about mods their first few times playing.

Mese is a type of crystalline structure, and crystals are very good for conducting and storing different types of energy, and conducting signals via the vibrational state of the crystal lattice.
If it were somehow possible to create a form of "diode" out of Mese which only allows energy to flow in one direction through it, you could use it as a kind of capacitor - or more interesting, use it to create a bomb - or even some kind of multi-use energy weapons based on a capacitor and some functional part of the weapon into which the energy is released.
Lasers are often made with a rod-shaped crystal, which is then "pumped" full of light with extremely bright flash tubes - exciting the atoms and stimulating a directed emission of radiation. Perhaps Mese crystals could be used to make lasers.
Maybe if you tried to consume a powderized form of Mese, you would be granted certain status buffs like raised absorption of damage, raised strength, heightened awareness of the environment or possibly even the ability to see in the dark.

@SegFault22 I like that idea! Maybe Mese could be used to enhance tools (as an alternative to enchanting)?

Love this idea! I've always wanted an enchantment function in Minetest. Maybe the enchantment would consume mese instead of lapis?

Kpenguin, the idea is to avoid enchanting, many people don't like that kind of stuff, so, benrob0329's idea is pretty good.
Maybe puting a tool or weapon in the center of the crafting grid and placing mese crystals around it to make it better.

There are lots of people who are fine with enchanting. I think it's great to have enchanting in minetest. If someone wants to make a mod that is not enchanting then that is fine too.

@Don but not everyone is, so having an alternatve that everyone is ok with (and might be more epic (I want my flamethrower sword!!!)) would get MT more players.

I agree that some people do not agree with enchanting which is why I say that there should be both. There are a number of Christian mod makers on here. Perhaps one of them can make it. If there is any other mod makers of other religions they can make mods that work for their religions. Maybe a Muslim can make mods that is ok with Islam and a Jew can make mods that work with their religion. Same with any other religion that play this game. If there is any one who has a religion that is not being represented then please say so. With the many good people on this forum someone might make a mod for you.

Just to clarify, I didn't directly mean "enchanting", just some sort of feature that gives your tools special abilities, like enchanting does in MC.

You could also do it in a realistic way, e.g. full automatic mining drills:

What about putting the mese crystals inside a bucket, then melting it on a furnace, and pouring it on a tool to make it stronger? afaik you can melt crystals, not sure if that would actually work.
