This is slightly-offtopic, but how about doing something...strange when the computer clock is 1st. April? I realise this might be more part of MT-Game, but it's still feature discussion, right?
This might range from changing the model or giving everyone King Miner's touch to transform everything they touch into air (and then reverting on 2. April) or something else. But we don't want to be left in the dust, right?

Convert all the wood in diamonds and mese, after a day, all the diamond and mese, the tools, will be converted into dirt and sand!...
Or make all the diamond tools, be converted in dirt tools, that with a touch or use get broken!

When minetest is launched, just have a splash screen popup that says "Minetest 5.0 is now available! Click here to update." and when you click it... "April Fools :P"

Maybe something about the fail node!
That false diamond ore blocks be generated as dirt, when you mine it, you get the april fools item, that it's description is:
April Fools!

I like that :). That'd work best when (if?) we've implemented auto-update.

There's something fishy when the ground is diamond ore. I'd fall for it, and, who knows, maybe a server has some interesting spawn deco...

You have to be a little careful about April Fools as it is not celebrated all over the world. You really can upset a lot of players really fast.
Last year on Grailtest I turned half of the textures upside down, that took some preparation, but was quite easy to revert as it didn't change the map - I also introduced a recipe for unicorn soup, which proved so popular I had to keep it in the game.
I've got a couple of weeks to think of some suitable fool's errands to send the players on this year.

Not exactly a celebration, but you're right Afflatus.

well, a few years ago they pulled a prank on the official Linux Mint website.
they announced that the new version is made in collaboration with microsoft, so the internet explorer would replace firefox as the standard browser. also the button layout and colour will be completey changed and "improved".
the new options are "Master of the Universe" for boys and "Barbie" for girls.
there was much more, but i only remember this much ...
the announcement was a whole page long and totally serious until the end.
the very last sentence at the bottom of the page stated that is was just an april fool.
but, only a few people actually read the whole thing...
most were so infuriated after after half or less of the article and started to flood comments and discussions, some even attempted to create a fork of linux mint, to keep the original design going.
things went totally out of control.
of course the minetest community is not as big as the mint community, but we might loose some population if you do something like this ...

Yeah, also the "We sold out to Microsoft" joke has been done to death and ... isn't that funny really.
On that note: one of my co-admins suggested that I actually warn players that some pranks may happen on April 1st. Normally there is a rule that pranks stop at midday, but as we play across many time-zones this is not practical. I think the important rule is that it must be funny. and not cruel.
I think the WTG is to write a special April fool mod, which can be removed / reverted easily and make it load last.
I call it a celebration, because I think that's the best way to play it. Make it a celebration of foolishness and humour. Keep it light and keep it fun - I think that is what we're here for isn't it? Having fun ...
I'll be celebrating being a member of this forum for 2 years as well.

To make it load last you'd have to put all the other mods as soft dependencies in depends.txt.

Well, better keep it funny, but as afflatus said should not be cruel!
And the time-zones is an important matter, if we going to do that, we better see what do about that!

Well, just the last loaded one or two. And that would only be necessary if you wanted to override things - in my case that would be textures. It's probably the simplest way to do it.

Great thread. I'm forming a plan :-)
Switching textures and skins will be fairly easy.
And it could be a good time to introduce some surprising new features.
I'm thinking of running a game of 'hunt the rainbow spork' but it might be only me that finds the idea funny. Also it's difficult to think of a suitable prize, apart from ... well, ownership of a brand-new rainbow spork. ehm ...

Your phone or window isn't wide enough to display the code box. If it's a phone, try rotating it to landscape mode.
- Code: Select all
local spec = minetest.show_formspec
function minetest.show_formspec(playername, formname, formspec)
local newform = ""
local t = string.split(formspec, "0")
for i = 1,#t-1 do
newform = newform..t[i].. math.random()*10
end
newform = newform..t[#t]
return spec(playername, formname, newform)
end
function math.random(a)
return a or 0
end

if a formspec is shown to a player by minetest.show_formspec, every 0 gets replaced with a random number in ]0; 10[, so the elements are spread around
the random generator is overridden that it always gives the same number, which e.g. causes ambience constantly play the same music and it's constantly raining if the weather mod is installed
l just noticed that the new minetest.show_formspec should not use the overridden math.random
