Proposal: Change the behavior of Mese [Completed]

This proposal has been completed.

A simple straw poll to see what people think of my idea of changing Mese to be something a bit more versitile.

At the risk of slightly biasing this poll, I have implemented option 3 for experimentation. See Pull request #65 against minetest_game for details; you can test this on my server at vanessae.mine.bz port 30000.

If you comment here, please also vote in the straw poll above so I can figure out the results more easily.

I voted for ingots. That just seems to suite mese more than the other options. Either way, the textures need to be changed.. The "mese" on yellow background texture sucks...

I prefer the crystal thing but the current textures are not very good. Can anybody provide new textures?

Ingots are booring. If every mineral has ingots there is nothing "special" about mese.

Can't vote because I will not grant that site the use of JavaScript (I seldom do). The lump-solution seems most logical to me since all the other ores drop lumps as well. But crystals would be ok too (not that much diffrence there; the coal needed for the lumps hardly counts).
The texture of MESE looks strange. As far as gameplay is concerned, that intense glowing yellow is a plus because it makes it easier to locate mese.

I like it that mese is different from other materials. That's just a basic principle of design - if everything acts the same, you could make dozens, thousands of materials all just going by a different name. If every material acts different you are limited, and that is somehow less entropic.

My proposal: leave MESE as it is and create a crystal-like thing that acts the way you described. You could call it ESEM ;)

MESE has been in minetest in it's current form for like forever. I don't think it should be changed. Really, I'd like the MESE pick to break blocks instantly like it did pre-0.4, maybe make it more rare for balance. The MESE pick isn't a normal pick; it is a completely different "magic" tool; for that reason I have been against mods that add MESE shovels, axes, etc. and making the MESE pick take time to dig. I would like to see some more MESE-based magic stuff. Maybe add a recipe to break the MESE block into fragments to use.

I strongly support keeping it as-is and adding new uses without changing the current recipes.

I voted for mese ingots too. Maybe when DM's come back we could make them guard mese in chests, because i think that when
you found mese, you had to be careful because of DM's Because they guarded mese...i think.

It should drop a dust. And then you craft four dust into one raw mese ingot. Which makes a tool on its own. Then smelting those ingots or crafting them into a 3x3 square makes a mese gem, which repairs mese tools when crafting them with it?

I voted for ingots. Mese should be made a LOT more rare, once you get to -300 and deeper it seems like they're more common then things like iron. -_- Gold and Mithril need to be more common then mese.

This proposal is completed. The final tally was:


1. Yes: make mese drop a crystal, craft those into fragments or into tools/blocks/etc. Use fragments for lower-power mese-based items.
28 votes (52%)

2. Yes: make mese drop a lump like coal, cook that to ingots, craft those into tools/blocks/etc. Use the lumps for lower-power mese-based items.
12 votes (22%)

3. No: leave Mese alone - it's fine the way it is!
10 votes (19%)

4. Undecided

5. Yes: but make it something else entirely - specify in the forum thread.

In light of this, the proposed Crystals-in-stone -> whole crystals -> crystal fragments change has been integrated into minetest_game git master by PilzAdam.

For those who hate my textures :-) new ones are certainly welcome and I'm sure if they're good they'll be added.
