Auto Chat Translation...

While playing on certain servers it was imporssible to chat to users who don't speak my own language, first because I cannot copy n paste text to and from Minetest...
would it be possible to have an add-on mod that lets you choose your default language and when someone types it will convert their text via google translate to your language so you can read (with an OFF switch just in case)...

Great idea but it wouldn't work with the way lua is implemented. The server would stop everything else it was doing to contact google translate and get the results. Once the results were back it would resume normal operation. So you could have a second or two pause in the server for each chat message.

not for me
Maybe it has to do with OS? I run Windows 7...

This also would not work because spelling is awful, think how many spelling errors people have and its hard to translate without correct spelling.

copy/paste doesn't work for me either on arch. Despite google being evil and all, i'd still like to understand all the players on my server, and for them to understand me.

Why Google Translate? What if it could use a native translation engine server-side? Yes, translation programs do exist. It would cause chatting to be laggy, but much less so than Google.
Running
client-side would be lightning-fast, but it would eat up a good 2GB of hard drive. Ouch.

If the engine is written in C/C++, you can create a small wrapper library, and load it from Lua in a server mod.

So what do you do when you run a server and you got several people speaking different languages?
[edit] turns out google's translation api is no longer free but bings' is.

What really REALLY annoys me is that you can't say something like Français, because of that c. It does work on a french KEYBOARD, but not with Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V. Why is this?
