I havn't seen many attempts by the landrush mod maker to solve the real problems with players breaking in - i.e. stuff stolen from furnaces and technic machines. To me, hurting the digger is just a way to get away with doing some PvP and killing players without having to morally pay for it. On the landrush server, it is common for regular players to get killed and banned temporally - because it's not always obvious that some land is protected. Most builders work around this obstacle by sharing all their land with other builders.
Well, it's funny how this discussion comes up more times in the latest time.
The fact is,
every protection mod
could protect furnaces, technic machines and even "normal" chests.
The general function "minetest.is_protected(pos, player_name)" allows or disallows people to access to nodes (take/put stuff into it included).
Hurting newbies and kids for digging a "Wtf, why this kills me?!"-node is not the best tutorial at all. By default, banning is disabled at "the" landrush mod, also the damage is configureable. Some players think, it's good (me inclusive) to have the "Learning by doing fails.", others can see it like kids, which see freedom and access everywhere.
Harder breakable glass is actually a good idea. Also, not every player knows/wants to modify their clients.
