Torch light - feature or problem?

One thing I've noticed while moving through dungeons or caverns....

Holding a torch does NOT produce light until placed.

This means you have to put a torch up to see your surroundings while exploring. Annoying if you come across a DM or Okekai (black spector) in the drakness. Yes, DMs light things up but that means you being fireballed.

Programming wise, you become the light source if holding the torch. Lights out if you switch to sword or pickaxe.

A tactic that could be used is have only one torch, find something ... mob or ore; place then switch to pickaxe or weapon.

Still I find not having light when holding a torch annoying.

That's a feature. There's no dynamic lightning in minetest.

What sfan5 linked above was done quite some time ago but was never accepted upstream as celeron55 didn't like the approach taken in that patch. iirc it caused to much lag on older hardware.

Emm, why not make it optional with option in menu and config?

Don't know, I may be wrong you would have to ask Tango or Celeron55 >_<
