You can't incinerate items with lava?
Well... at least I can't. I can't say for other people because I don't know.
Anyways, is there a way to get rid of items? Other than dumping it in some random place far away from sight?

You can /pulverize to destroy the item in your hand. Some inventory mods, such as Unified Inventory, also provide a "trash" field that you can drag items to to destroy them.
