Help, MT4.9 giving me problems!!

by nikminers » Fri Mar 14, 2014 00:53

I've been simply ignoring them since they don't seem to pose a serious threat, but I've been having issues with the latest MT

-When I exit to OS, the main game window closes, but I have to force (x) the second window to close. Similarly, when I exit to menu it just stays at the black screen prior to entering the main menu, which forces me to force-close and re-open MT if I want to build in one of my other worlds. This does not pose a threat to my system or save files, it's just extremely annoying and I want it to stop happening.

-Fences. The default fences are only placing 1 node at a time in creative mode. By this I mean I need to fill the inventory slot for the fence with the # of posts I need. Short of altering the fence's script to put x number of fences in the inventory what can I do?

-Bad Allocation. Minetest keeps crashing with a bad allocation error, at least once a day. From what I understand this is because the game fills the ram to it's max until it can no longer run the current session forcing me to close and re-open the game. If that's not what bad allocation means please tell me what I can do about it. And if it really is filling the ram then why?? That's highly impractical.

As for my system, here's the detailed specs covering major parts:

-AMD Opteron 165 1.8ghz OCd to 2.04ghz w/ air cooling (56 idle, never goes above 67 degrees under full load).(tested and completely stable)
-4gb ddr 400mhz (1gb x4) 2x OCZ Platinum 2x Kingston HyperX, all the same clock speeds and timings by default.(tested and completely stable)
-200gb Samsung Spinpoint SATA HDD 7200rpm (tested, no bad sectors or any sign of improper operation)
-MOBO: DFI LanParty NF4 SLI-DR, purchased brand-new/unused 3 months ago. Beautiful gaming/overclocking board for it's age (2005).
-OS/software: Win.XP Black x86, all drivers and software updated and stable, MBAM and MSE for security.

Do you use any mods that change the fence behaviour? In the default minetest_game you place fences like any other block in creative mode.

How much RAM does your computer have? I recommend at least 4GB of it.

@Inocudom
I have 4gb DDR, 2x Kingston HyperX, 2x OCZ Platinum, clocks/timings all the same. I posted my specs already, at the bottom.

@PilzAdam
I don't have any fence related mods installed (that I know of), but this is what I do have:

-bones
-default
-bucket
-creative
-doors
-dye
-external_legacy
-Farming
-Fire
-flowers
-give_initial_stuff
-Legacy
-screwdriver
-stairs
-vessels
-wool
-homedecor_modpack
-newlights
-worldedit 1.0
-noncubic
-streets
-covers
-jail
-computers
-plasmascreen
-castle
-Lrfurn

I was thinking maybe the bars from the jail mod were doing it, but they behave properly. I haven't tried removing the jail mod yet, I'll let you know how that turns out.

It could be homedecor too; AFAIK it has some fence related code for the signs.

Yep, it was homedecor's fault, or rather signs_lib. Leftover bug from when I forked the signs code off of the main mod - I forgot the infinite stacks detection. Fixed in homedecor_modpack git.

These are the exact same problems I have been experiencing. Its really frustrating.

I have a really good computer myself aside from being an XP operating system. I have 4GB of ram too. Minetest shouldn't be taking that much memory when a high end game such as Bioshock2 or even Second Life which are both far more demanding on my computer still don't use that much memory.

Both these problems occur simultaneously when I try to play on Vanessa's creative server so often that its made it just too frustrating to play for longer than maybe 10 minutes. It happens on every other server I try too which basically means I'm stuck on my own worlds all alone where it still happens there too but much rarer.

Regarding MT0.4.9 -

using Ubuntu on a dualcore P5 4Gb ram@800MHz- Dual Screen HD graphics 1Gb OpenGL3.0

everything updated ( even Ubuntu 3 times a day. lol )

MT 4.9 seems to be using all the mods & textures from my old 0.4.7 ???

4.9 =(Home/mindtest/mods/mods_here.txt ) Empty

4.7 = (Home/.minetest/mods/[13 files] )

to start 4.9 I have to navigate to home/minetest/bin/ minetest - no logo
the older 4.7 is installed in DashHome from Software Centre - with no logo.

Ubuntu won't let me upgrade 4.7 -> 4.9 ( it's not in the software centre )

REASON for post, I cannot get habitat to work - frequent error messages

[ just noticed while trying to get screen shot ]
[ Static_sharedir=/home/path_user = 4.7's path ]
[ and habitat is not in either mods directories ]

That is the expected behaviour for non-RUN_IN_PLACE builds.

It would be useful if you would post the error messages.

I guess you need to install the habitat mod (missing dependency). You can get it here:
https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?id=4612
and/or
You need to rename it to: habitat

You can ignore the error messages with '49'. It means that there are too much mobs (objects) in that area and that they are going to be deleted.

The gulls take too long, I guess those of Mobf, doesn't ring a bell for me. But my best bet is you can ignore that message too.

Edit: Typo's

did that, but put it in 4.9'd files, . . . it's listed as a dependant mod, but don't run, because of it's location ?

NVM, . . .

how / where do I, change this ' static_sharedir=/home/path_user = /home/.minetest '
[ when you hit escape ]

for my newer 4.9 version ?

- to point it to it's correct target ?
( Copied . . . /worlds & / textures & /mods to 4.9's install )

I've no/not much knowledge about that, but with just reading what CMake does, I don't think you can change it without rebuilding Minetest.

I use run-in-place versions of minetest. Earlier today I tested with a system-wide version and saw that it could be uninstalled. Maybe that's an option. But I don't know if uninstalling also uninstalls libraries or disrupts whatever your 0.4.9 version is depending on. Since I use a Virtual boxmanager I made use of a snapshot (restorepoint) to 'uninstall' it.
