Well, just for a start now, everytime I turn on Linux, getting a message saying that there has been a 'severe software problem- would you like to report it?' At this point any open programs close.
First I tried VannessA's Ubuntu build. I downloaded the file and ran it to get Minetest, and did the same with the luajit file. They both seemed to install fine. Then when I tried to run Minetest (from the terminal) it told me I didn't have luajit installed. No matter how many times I reinstalled luajit it wouldn't work.
I also tried the gui version of Cmake and it couldn't compile Minetest- it said that there were errors with the files- it couldn't find the cmake.txt (I think that is what it was called); and also running the 'one line command' from a couple of threads above this one will only say several things, like it couldn't find libvorbis-dev, or libopenal-dev, or a couple of others (can't remember it all- I'll try again later).
Last of all I tried to search the internet for 'How to compile in Ubuntu 12.10' and got no results that gave me working commands. I have now just resorted to using Windows, which runs slowly on my computer. Linux keeps giving me the severe problem message.
I can't copy and paste into my terminal. I select whatever text I want to copy, and it copies it to clipboard. I then try to paste it into Terminal and nothing happens. In case the text is just invisible, I hit enter, which just writes M^ suggesting that there was no text there which was invisible.
