Stairs and slabs light issue

It seems that stairs and slabs are somehow lighter, than full blocks. It's like they are not blocking the light properly, or something. It's really annoying, when I'm trying to build some nice structures. When I place a stair or slab next to a full block I can clearly see the difference. And it's not nice.
Is it possible to fix this?

Nodebox and meshnode drawtypes does not support smooth lighting in the engine.

That's too bad.
Turning off smooth lighting solves that, but the shadows are not pretty. Anyway, thanks for the info.
