what does the "Name/Password" mean (client server list)?

What is it,and Why does it stop me from connecting to multiplayer servers? It says,"Access Denied. Reason:Name/Password contains unallowed characters".what is that supposed to mean,and how do I fix this?

Most servers REQUIRE you choose a player name, using only a-z, 0-9 characters - try again.

Nevermind! It doesn't work anymore,the Connection timed out...

Generally, a Connection timed out message means the server in question crashed - wait a few minutes and try again (most decent servers have auto-reboot software running).

KCoombes was almost right.
The player name may only contain the characters A-Z, a-z, 0-9, the hyphen and the underscore. That's it. If your player name contains any other character, it's invalid and you can't join any server with it.
Too bad the error message doesn't tell you this. :-(
