I edited a player file with a text editor (geany) over ftp and I cannot seem to be able to log that player back in. Login gives me the 0, 0.5, 0, no HUD, no chat; grey emptiness. I cannot connect from another computer OR login directly on the server.

Things I've tried:

Logging in as another existing user (works fine)
Restoring the player file from backup (over ftp while server was online, player not connected)
Restarting server.

Anyone have any ideas?

Yes, I have had this too.

You need to make sure the inventory slots are all there and indexed correct. I believe this to be a missing inventory slot.

I would try offliine, server down.
Also write permission on the file? I've had the problem before I believe is caused by editing on my computer then the permission wasn't valued on the server and I had to login to server to give it write permnission again

You should try restoring from backup while the server is offline, as minetest is likely to overwrite the file otherwise.
