Changes in map generation causes world destabilization

by ecube » Thu May 10, 2012 05:33

For example, changing generate_ore things or other mapgen stuff causes the world to start to completely regenerate, destroying buildings and the landscape, and turning stuff into sand, dirt, and desert. I'm not sure whether this has been posted before; I never really had the time to look. Still, can we make it so that adding changes to these does not cause the map to mess up?
Thanks.

I don't play too much. (I spend more time compiling or just looking at the source code)
But I do have a similar issue on the latest git dev that could be explained by what you mention.

It's an old world. I decided to copy the world into my latest build.
I set the gameid to minimal (which has a mapgen.lua that calls generate_ore).

Then I played a bit..
I decided to build a simple bridge with fences.
Then I wandered away for some time.
When I came back, the fences and some air space had been converted to dirt.

Haven't looked into it, but it sounds very similar to what you encountered.
Unless otherwise specified: I use linux and run (and compile) the latest dev.

I just hope that adding a generate thing for mese doesn't mess things up when its generated far below the surface...
