A matter of outdated hardware?

I wanted to test MT in preparation for some sort of serious gaming project, in the widest sense - and because of the older hardware I currently have, I especially hoped to be able to run MT, since it's not java-based, but c++. It turns out though that MT has quite some lags on my machine (see my recent post, which does not belong there : http://minetest.net/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=40690#p40690 )...
Anything I can do about it?
